The high technology of the Hexamon civilization, with their control over genetic engineering, human augmentation (including post- symbolic communication), the concept of parallel universes, alternate timelines and the manipulation of space-time itself are major themes in the latter half of the novel. I didn't care too much for any given character but that often doesn't bother me as I'm more interested in the worldbuilding (tech, history etc).

Middling disappointment comes from a story that felt exciting or new when written has been surpassed by more recent explorations. I am well aware that Eon has been written in the 1980s, before the end of the Cold War, and nuclear exchange between the two superpowers was still a possibility, albeit faint. Axis City had been waging war against aliens inhabiting the Way, and is presently facing the most serious attack, when the aliens threaten to open a doorway into the center of a star, thus flooding the Way with plasma. Computers seem able to communicate "subliminally" with humans, but Bear never goes into the nuts and bolts. As a result of commerce through the gates, several alien species have come to be partners of the Hexamon as well.Having written in the late Cold-war period, this has its echoes to it, reverberating nearly throughout the story. In both cases, we have two groups that are not necessarily enemies but have very different ideas of how to achieve their goals. This sounds like a distillate of the worst YA tropes wrapped up in a “serious” cloak… I know what you mean when you say that having read many books in the genre it takes something exceptional to keep your interest focused, and this one clearly is not. She finds libraries and books from human future, some of which describe a catastrophic nuclear exchange between the US and Soviet Union, after which the survivors built their habitats inside the asteroid and went to find a new habitable planet. It has the exact same profile as Juno, but much less mass, because someone has hollowed it out into seven enormous chambers.

These were awesome and very-well written with good and perfect amount of descriptions, in comparison to Eon.Scientists quickly calculate that the asteroid is empty, and the US is first to land a team there to claim it for itself. Still, as an avid sci-fi reader I like reading the odd bits of technobabble as long as they do not overwhelm the book to the point of rendering it unreadable.
