About this deal

Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s gritty novel is steeped in the history of Mexico City and vampire lore and yet manages to deftly re-invent the bloodsucker .

Atl’s family served Huitzilopochtli, the Aztec god of war, who was symbolized as a hummingbird until the conquistadors arrived. A compelling supporting character is checkmated out of the book in the most anticlimactic way possible, only to have their fate dragged out unnecessarily for multiple chapters. And surprisingly, each of the three books I read were completely different (other than those similarities I just pointed out). Note: I received a complimentary review copy of this book from NetGalley and publisher Macmillan-Tor/Forge.Picture this a runaway vampire with roots tracing as far back as the Aztec empire and a teenage trash collector are on the run in a futuristic Mexico City.

There’s a lot of discussion in this book about the role of Renfields and their relationships with the vampires they serve. The intro to this book explains that Moreno-Garcia first published it in 2016, but the public’s fascination with urban fantasy and vampires was in decline (“the market had been bled dry,” she explains). The interesting aspect of this vampire novel is that it doesn’t offer the same old tired tropes we know from all those European vampire stories we know. Set in a beautifully and heartbreakingly rendered Mexico caught up in Narco-Vampire wars, Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s novel lets us fall in love with many perspectives before she breaks our hearts and puts us back together again.Atl and Domingo stand little chance at all of making it out alive before the city devours them all – but they are determined to try .

We first meet Domingo, a man who works as a garbage picker, lives essentially on the streets and people watches for a hobby. The main character, Atl, didn't have much to endear her to the reader, and in fact, I nearly hated her.

Certain Dark Things is exquisitely vicious and brutally beautiful * Ann Aguirre, New York Times bestselling author * Certain Dark Things is dark, inimitable, and so very, very cool. She wasn’t wearing a fancy outfit, but it fit her well; the clothes were of good quality, he could tell as much. Atl is hesitant to trust anyone other than her faithful dog Cualli, but with cops, crime lords, and vampires all closing in on her, she’s not going to be able to last long in the city without some human help. Atl is a vampire on the run when she meets Domingo, a young man who lives in a subway tunnel under the city. It's a good story with solid world creation, but for me, I would need a little more substance before I could say that I really enjoyed it.

One night on the subway, he encounters Atl, an Nahautl (Aztec) woman who seems to be about his age, and her dog. Para una persona que no es muy fan de los vampiros como yo, acabé enganchadísima con el universo que la autora imagina con sus diferentes razas, peculiaridades y voces. Mexico City has become a closed nation city, leaving the rest of the country at the mercy of powerful vampire gangs who fight for territory against each other and the humans.
