About this deal

I am a full-time author writing psychological thrillers which also happens to be my favourite genre to read. Kim is a full-time writer. She has one daughter, two stepsons and lives with her husband in Nottingham and Yorkshire. To sum it all up it was an enjoyable, exciting, fast-paced, and an entertaining read with a satisfying and surprising ending. I don’t think this story was at all predictable. Would highly recommend!!

Second, I have an issue with Rose as a character. Though I understand a teenage girl being infatuated with a dashing older man, Rose seems overly foolish. She constantly makes excuses for Gareth's terrible behavior; believes whatever he says; and gives in to him against her better judgement. Even as an adult, Rose has trouble dealing with the manipulative creep. I just don't like to see a character being such a doormat (and a little whiny to boot). Step by step Gareth manipulated Rose into isolating herself from her family and friends. He also convinced her to accede to his increasingly intrusive demands. Gareth wanted to control every aspect of Rose's life - from the movies she saw, to the flavor of ice cream she ate, to her college plans. When Rose resisted Gareth's 'requests', he became furious and made ominous threats. It was true. Her heart was banging against her chest wall like a tin drum and her mouth and throat were dry with fear. They joke with friends about hiding behind bushes to ensure she is safe. But the joke turns sour when Grace does not appear. I think the start of this is good as is the premise which looks at the impact of one person on several lives especially when prison is thrown into the mix. There are several perspectives and Samuels is good, he is chilling, manipulative and makes your flesh crawl. Maggies is also interesting and via her we certainly get some intriguing and revealing plot twists which help to make sense of a lot.The story is told in several timelines starting in 1993 when eight year old Jimmy Bennett is deliberately trapped and subsequently dies inside a disused factory for which Samuel Barlow is convicted. Twenty five years on Samuel is due for release on parole, a huge cause of concern to Jimmy’s sister Josie, a cafe owner and single mum to eight year old Ivy. Maggie, Samuel’s mother is similarly concerned partly because he is now a prison hardened but more than capable of playing games and he was obsessed with with Josie when growing up. Will Josie and Maggie‘s concerns prove to be justified?

All across the USA, people are showing up dead. The deaths don't appear to be connected in any way until one particular death occurs and gets the Secretary of Defense's attention. He arranges for a task force to investigate.Grace is 9 years old the day she goes missing. She had convinced her parents that she wanted to walk home from her friend’s house that day. It was only a 5 minute walk and her friend Olivia’s father was supposed to watch her walk part of the way and her dad Blake was supposed to watch her come round the bend. Somewhere in between she went missing “just like that.” Yet another fabulous title to add to my Bookouture beauties! I have recently come to associate Bookouture with a love of books and probably the most consistent crime thriller collection out there today. That is why each time I get to read an ARC copy of one of their killer thrillers, I just can't say no! Clear the calendar.... Here comes K.L. Slater's new title, THE MISTAKE! My little girl’s room is dark. Her bed is empty. I turn on her unicorn nightlight and bury my face in her pillow, my heart breaking.
