About this deal

Salt can be detrimental to plant growth and can block plants from uptaking calcium, magnesium and iron. Your garden seeds are sealed for freshness inside white glassine envelopes which are a water/vapour resistant compostable paper product whilst your Microgreen and Sprouting Seeds arrive in resealable zip lock pouches made from GMO free vegetable starch which are further heat sealed to ensure these great products reach you safely!

Gardeners have been using peat as a growing medium for years, but the process of digging up peat bogs produces considerable amounts of CO 2. These bricks are ideal for cuttings and seed germination or for making your very own compost in the garden.

Now, however, this former waste product is being harvested into a variety of products, ranging from fibers used for rugs and insulation to gardening and composting media. If done in tidal waters, the coconut coir will take up a large amount of salt, which will need to be flushed out by the manufacturer at a later stage. Retains moisture and provides a good environment: Coco coir is one of the most effective growing media for water retention out there. Good quality manufacturers then wash the coir to remove any salt, treat it to kill off any bacteria so it’s as inert as possible with a neutral pH. The most important factors in high-quality coco coir are how it is harvested, prepared, and processed.

To save your back and reduce plastic, you can mix perlite, vermiculite and organic fertiliser to create your own. Perlite and vermiculite are minerals that absorb and slowly release moisture, they also create air pockets when added to a potting mix. Coco coir is a great medium to use if you’re new to hydroponic gardening and do not want to invest in a full hydroponic system. The only difference is instead of watering with only water, you would water your coconut coir garden with nutrient-enriched water. It is quite hard to saw through the product to make smaller quantities as i don't need the whole brick at once. Much more goes into the process of making coco coir safe and optimal for horticultural use, but we’ll get into that a bit lower in the article.

All our seeds and products have been tested here by us however if we still cant help you get growing we will offer a free replacement. If too much water is added when making coco coir bricks, you may need to allow the mixture to sit and dry, as too much water can cause damage to your plants by essentially drowning the roots. When using coconut coir in the garden, you must use the right mixture of these three types for the best results. Coir is well known for its water-retaining properties; it can hold moisture well without the material becoming clogged, it also remains very well aerated, even after heavy watering. It must be aged properly to be used as a growing media, as it can let out salts that will kill your plant if you’re not careful. He previously worked as a project manager and has experience in managing teams of tradespeople and landscape gardeners on both small and medium sized projects. That means the roots of your plants have access to moisture but are unlikely to rot due to overwatering.

These bales are then chopped and processed into various formats, from chips, to “croutons” to classic ground coconut coir. Because coconut coir is an inert growing media, you will need to supplement your plants with additional nutrition. Almost all of the coconut coir used for hydroponics is brown coir, as it’s processed even more after initial harvesting. In this guide, you’ll get just about everything you need to know about coco coir: what it is, its pros and cons, and the best brands to use. After correcting the coir with some additives, the plants went from strength to strength and have significantly outgrown the petunias I grew in regular compost. Coco coir is an environmentally friendly alternative that growers can use in gardens and hydroponics. You can get away with the standard General Hydroponics Flora series, a pH testing kit, and some Calimagic calcium + magnesium supplement. Our coco coir bricks can be used for seeds and cuttings as long as they’re potted up once established.
