About this deal

A “part” could be anything, it’s just a generic unit of measure. One “part” can be a cup, a gallon, a scoop, a handful… whatever makes the most sense to you, and how large of a batch you plan to make. If it’s a small batch, and you’re using a container with a lid for mixing, you could shake it up to combine the ingredients. I’ve been growing indoor plants most of my life, and I’m pretty sure I’ve used just about every type of retail houseplant soil mix in existence. It always amazes me how different they can be, depending on what brand you buy.

For reasons of hygiene and safety, personal grooming products, cosmetics or items of intimate clothing cannot be returned. Unwanted Food or Drink Products - Once supply conditions are broken, there are a number of factors outside of our control that can affect the quality of a product. Therefore perishable goods such as food and drink cannot be returned. You will need to add fertilisers to your peat-based DIY potting soil as the mix won’t naturally contain enough nutrients to support good plant growth. Lightweight and sterile, perlite can hold up to four times its weight in water and is excellent for improving drainage.

Important: The opening measurement of the decorative pot is the size of the access hole for inserting the plant's grow pot as well as an indication of the minimum liner size needed. It is not the same as the external diameter of the pot which is the overall outer size of the pot. Please note all measurements are approximate and can vary slightly due to the handmade nature of our pots. When you have potted your houseplant you need to keep an eye on the top layer of the soil. You may find the top layer of soil becomes white or gets little bugs. This can be due to poor soil or damp soil as well. You can add a layer of horticultural grit on top, or stones of any kind plus there are other available products such as broken shells. If you experience some problems with your top layer, please ask our staff members at the garden centre for help. They can give you advice on what you should do. Replenishnutrients Sphagnum peat moss is a natural occurring, moisture-retaining material that is free of plant pathogens, weed seeds, mineral salts, or heavy metals. However, harvesting sphagnum peat moss comes with many sustainability issues that need to be considered. This article was researched and written by Amanda Rose Newton, a freelance garden reviewer for The Spruce. As a horticulture professor, business owner, and entomologist, she delighted in personally testing out the recommended products to provide advice to those with unique needs, yards, and values when it comes to all things soil. Beyond the sustainability issues, sphagnum peat moss is also very acidic and difficult to re-hydrate. The acidic pH, re-hydration issue, and sustainability concerns are strong enough reasons to go with a peat alternative. Coconut coir or woody materials such as sawdust, composted bark, or wood fiber work as a replacement for this recipe.

For the organic components, some advocate using some worm castings from a vermicomposting system, or other homemade composts in relatively small amounts. We tend to add a couple of spoonfuls of it to potting soil and mix it together before filling the pot; this way the soil remains loose and won’t compact around the plant when it goes in. It’s important to remember that perlite is 100% inorganic and doesn’t contain any nutrients, so it does need to be combined with soil or compost to work. You can also use perlite for outdoor plants, too: it’s particularly useful when establishing root cuttings, and can even help aerate a newly laid lawn. Most soils contain nutrients for the first six weeks. After the first six weeks, your plants will need to have some new nutrients after using up everything in the new soil. Most plants won’t need repotting every year and if they do, it is best to do that in spring. Throughout the rest of the year, let your plants rest for winter and begin feeding them with a weekly fertilising from spring throughout summer. This will ensure the soil is replenished with nutrients to keep your plants thriving. Coir is an excellent alternative to sphagnum peat moss, because it contains more nutrients and lasts longer. The exception to this is the John Innes formulae for compost mixes, which are soil-based using sterilised loam, a peat substitute and sand,” says Master Horticulturist Roy Nicol.Note: Liners are "squashy" so they can be pushed through the opening to expand and fit closer to the pot wall once inside. Liners can also be cut down to size with scissors for a neater fit if they bulge inwards slightly at the top. Most come from dry, arid areas where rainfall and humidity are very low, so they will need a very free-draining medium and care which mimics these conditions. The grow pot height is standardised (normally 12cm or 19cm) and shown on the size option for each hydroculture plant. Ensure the external height of your decorative pot is at least 2-3cm higher than the grow pot height of the hydroculture plant. Remember, a well-cared-for plant is a happy plant. With the right compost mix, plant food, and pest prevention methods, your indoor garden will thrive. If you have more specific needs, remember that Houseplant UK offers a wide range of products, tailored for every indoor plant enthusiast. Exotic orchids bloom profusely indoors, filling homes with magnificent flowers over a long season. Despite their tropical appearance, popular orchids such as Phalaenopsis and Dendrobium are easy to grow. They thrive in open, free-draining, specialist compost. Over time, however, bark in these special mixes can degrade and become compacted, so orchids will benefit from repotting every few years. Westland Orchid Potting Mix holds the key to getting the most out of your orchids. It is formulated to promote healthy growth and an abundance of flowers. Added pine bark creates excellent airflow and drainage for healthy root development. The Seramis granules optimise water and nutrient availability. As with all of Westland’s indoor composts, the sustainable formulation is peat-free.

The slow-release nature of these high-quality compounds allows the plant to feed when it needs to and lessens the need for you to add any fertilizers. Healthy plants are better at resisting disease, fungus, and pest outbreaks, and this soil helps get your plants to that point. Rare and special color variations can result in a big price tag for some indoor plants so it is worth it to get a soil you know will do the job. This John Innes mix is used for seed sowing and growing on until the seedlings are ready to be transplanted to larger pots. Also good for rooting cuttings. Hydroculture plant roots have been specially adapted to grow in hydrogranules, which creates a smaller, more fleshy and hardier root system. This results in mature plants being available in smaller grow pots than their soil based equivalents. How do I choose the correct sized decorative pot to fit my houseplant?
