About this deal

In the simplest terms, transferring an audio signal to a single headphone driver requires a pair of wires to create a loop. This loop connects the audio source and the load (headphone driver). For a pair of headphones, there are two wires connected to each channel: left ‘L’ and right ‘R’. Each pair of wires provides a voltage reference; it is the difference between these references that drives our headphones. It works the same way for line-level connections between components. It also has intrinsic shielding provided by minZ™ helix construction. They protect the cable from RFI and EMI noise and provide the cleanest transfer medium possible. Today, people use 6.35mm connectors mainly with professional audio equipment such as amplifiers, mixing consoles, audio interfaces, and musical instruments. In total, you’ll need four signal wires and one ground wire which only a TRRRS connector can provide.

The advantage of balanced connections over unbalanced connections is the canceling of noise interference via Common Mode Rejection (CMR). It is important to be able to recognize an unbalanced or balanced headphone cable and connector. A balanced cable can be used in an unbalanced source with the proper adapter. However, attempting to use an unbalanced cable with a balanced source is *usually* not possible, and will likely damage the source. A notable exception is detailed below. It’s far too easy to get swept up in a case of ‘upgradeitis’, where chasing every tweak and hyped potential improvement is the norm. Just because you read a manufacturer’s claim or heard from an online audiophile guru that balanced is ‘always superior’, doesn’t make it a fact in all (or perhaps even most) cases. With a focus on Class A analogue circuitry and maintaining the audio signal's integrity, iFi Audio's products offer exceptional performance without compromising environmental sustainability. They believe that how a product looks, performs, and impacts the environment all matter, and they strive to deliver audio solutions that meet these criteria. Second, if I add a 3.5 to 4.4mm “balanced adaptor” at the end of the 3.5 to 3.5mm unbalanced cable ( the OG cable ), can I get the full performance of the balanced output ? ( ALSO, will it “damage the coils” ? ) As such, balanced cables can run longer than unbalanced cables and operate in noisier environments because they can cancel out any noise interference. So when is audio unbalanced?

I got a pair of Denon AH-MM400 a while ago. I only recently discovered that it has low sensitivity, so I started researching about DAPs and dac amps. I saw that they usually have a 4.4mm balanced output. After doing some digging, I concluded that MM400 came with an unbalanced 3.5 to 3.5mm cable in the box. I heard that people say “balanced output sounds better”, but I also heard that you have to use a balanced cable with balanced output. Amps/DACs: FiiO E17K Alpen 2, Woo Audio 3, Sony TA-ZH1ES, Schiit Asgard, Cambridge Audio DACMagic Plus, Shanling UA3, PENON TAIL DAC/AMP I hope you realize that the way your express yourself does reveal a lot about you, and in this case, your brutal writing doesn't suggest you're very cautious with your gear. Balanced audio is all about interconnecting audio equipment and transmitting signals in a “balanced” manner. To do that, you need an audio source (amplifier) that can produce balanced output and a cable capable of carrying that balanced output.

A possible negative side effect of an unbalanced connection (line level or headphone) is the potential for unwanted noise, interference or hum to be introduced to the signal. Because the ground is linked, wayward currents from power supply transformer leakages or stray capacitance can become part of the audio signal. TRS cannot carry a balanced stereo signal as this requires at least four conductors. For that, see the TRRRS connector below.
