About this deal

Fortunately it is rather hard to argue against the standing of Dune, which is considered one of the great sci-fi classics. In a sense, all calendrical warfare is a game between competing sets of rules, fueled by the coherence of our beliefs. While some readers might not appreciate the way the setting is handled, I am sure that more would appreciate the author’s handling of character portrayal and development – in particular, the relationship between Kel Cheris and Shuos Jedao.

And like any good hero’s journey, from literal superhero fiction to epic fantasy and SF, Ninefox Gambit warns us that the protagonist we so desperately want to look up to may not, in fact, be much of a hero at all. As the siege wears on, Cheris must decide how far she can trust Jedao - because she might be his next victim. To win an impossible war, Captain Kel Cheris must awaken an ancient weapon and a despised traitor general. The fantastic thing about this series is that it gives you characters that are all too believable as inhabitants of a futuristic society with very different norms, but it makes them all seem grounded as well. The text block is printed offset/litho on 80gsm Munken paper, an archival paper that will stand the test of time.

There was some interest in the relationship between the protagonist and the dead general inserted into her mind, but this was explored less than I would have expected. While Star Wars certainly has its own merits, I prefer Star Trek because it offers a vision of a reality that might actually come to pass. How did Lee’s experiences as a trans man influence the transformations undergone by Cheris as a result of her uneasy partnership with Jedao?

It’s not how I prefer to read, and it affected my ability to build positive feelings for the book beyond intellectual appreciation and respect for the craft that went into its writing. This can end in three ways: rebellion against the Hexarchate, attempts to reform the system, or assimilation. That in and of itself isn't particularly unusual, but the way they rule and power their technology is.

The film adaptations of Dune have not met with widespread or even critical success, and since there are no adaptations currently in the works, Herbert’s work may continue to remain in relative obscurity for some time yet.But they’d definitely appreciate it if I mentioned that they are much, much prettier than the shark. It's overwhelming and jarringly bizarre, this world where light storms lash the land and a change in battlefield formation can create shields or tornadoes or magical laser rays that melt people's faces off.
