That man is Aaron Gates. Who it turns out is connected to a gang Sixth Day. Whom NOPD believe long disbanded but now believe are targeting Kaj's son. I found this a hard read for the first two chapters, I did not like any character, even the kid was annoying! where usually the main protagonists have a strong appeal. The romance, alway expected but I didn’t ‘feel’ this hook up at all! As I always say, I believe books need trigger warnings so my warnings here are drug abuse, child neglect and sexual assault. These are mostly just referred to and dealt with care and are quite brief so would not have put me off the book but I just believe readers should have that knowledge before reading. Like with the first book, despite the length, there was not enough relationship development, or romantic tension to make the relationship between Kaj and Val feel meaningful. I felt disconnected to their romance story because of this. And Val starts to question why her brother was murdered. Only the answer isn't the one she expected.

ELLIJAH is awesome but unbelievable at 9 years old. So definitely suspend your beliefs in this novel and just enjoy what you can. Everything lays out a bit too easily and some of the connections are OTT The two main characters, Val and Kaj, were developed with heart and kindness, plus the growth of steamy heat and simmering love interest tempered the ugliness surrounding them. This book was a trip! I am not sure how Rose keeps bringing fabulous stories that consistently offer a wonderful balance of suspense and romance. This one is a fabulous ride into the deep depths of the bayou and New Orleans. A fast-paced, high-intensity story that’ll carry you along on an amazing journey.”— New York Times bestselling author Lori Foster

Another minor thing which impacted the flow of the story were giving characters names that were somewhat difficult to know how to pronounce, only for the character to explain how to pronounce their oddly spelled name. This was consistent with the first book too and something which I found quite annoying 😅.

Beneath Dark Waters by Karen Rose - Books - Hachette

I seriously miss the old Karen Rose books. There’s so much more atmosphere, suspense and a lot of mystery. You could feel the tension and the fear!!This was a twisty tale told in part by one of the major villains of the story who is a real evil character. I enjoyed the relationships in the story. Val and Kaj are two damaged people who are healing and find each other along the way. He is dealing with the loss of his wife to cancer and raising a very bright and diabetic son. She is overcoming the trauma of being raped by three of her fellow Marines and then not letting the Marine Corps cover it up. There’s nothing left to wonder. You’re introduced to the villains immediately (and their decisions are ridiculous) and the romance blossoms in a day. There’s some heat, but normally I can’t wait til the characters get together. Val Sorenson, an ex-marine, is leading the protection duty and it’s not long before Kaj and Elijah dig out a special place in her heart. Little does Val know though that she’s got a personal connection to the thugs gunning for Elijiah and Kaj. It’ll take all of Broussard Investigations to head off these determined villains! My heart ached for the innocent here because these bad guys were awful! I didn’t want anyone landing in their hands at all! My heart pounded as the events unfolded! Thankfully, Val and Kaj were smart and didn’t take unnecessary risks. Still… Review copy was received from

In his debut collection of loosely connected stories set mostly in Tennessee, some of which draw on local folklore, Siegrist shows a remarkable ability to evoke the missing pieces in his characters’ lives. As the title suggests, water, in all its variations, is central to these tales of lost love, memory, and transformation. In the haunting BENEATH DARK WATERS is book 2 in Rose's New Orleans series and book #28 in the Romantic Suspense series. Karen Rose's signature style is evident with a long, compelling, intricately woven plot line spanning a relatively short amount of time revolving around a large cast of characters. Pay attention to the small details as they always prove to be clues in Rose's books. Her novels, I'M WATCHING YOU and SILENT SCREAM, received the Romance Writers of America's RITA award for Best Romantic Suspense for 2005 and 2011. Five of her other books have been RITA finalists.
