Fascinating. Zevin, in her first novel for young people, bends the laws of physics and biology to create an intricately imagined world.” — Publishers Weekly The go-to for your next hit of Nineties nostalgia; if you ever spent too long playing Donkey Kong, this one's for you Evening Standard, *Summer Reads of 2022* I recently read this book and loved it - it's the story of a friendship that waxes and wanes and evolves over the years, the kind that seldom gets depicted in fiction. Plus, it's a love letter to video games, the stories they tell and the way we use art to try to make meaning in our lives Celeste Ng, Washington Post

Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin | Waterstones

The concept and the world which Gabrielle Zevin's created is pretty unique and somewhat beautiful; it's what I like the most. Needless to say, Elsewhere focus on life (after death) and grief. The living (her family and friends) grieve her death while Liz grieves the life that has been taken from her. She has to learn to leave again in this new place and to appreciate her new life. However, I’m not a fan of the romance or do I just say love interest. It doesn’t work with me … a 28-year-old man (if I remember it correctly) fall in love with a 15-year-old girl. this is a book about the fleeting beauty of life, the necessity of love, and the bittersweetness of it all.”— Philadelphia Inquirer Liz looks out the porthole that is parallel to her bed. Sure enough, she sees hundreds of miles of early-morning darkness and ocean in all directions, blanketed by a healthy coating of fog. If she squints, Liz can make out a boardwalk. There, she sees the forms of her parents and her little brother, Alvy. Ghostly and becoming smaller by the second, her father is crying and her mother is holding him. Despite the apparent distance, Alvy seems to be looking at Liz and waving. Ten seconds later, the fog swallows her family entirely. Not wanting to further disturb the sleeping girl, Liz tiptoes across the room toward the bureau. The telltale sign that she is, indeed, at sea comes from the furniture: it is bolted to the floor. While she does not find the room unpleasant, Liz thinks it feels lonely and sad, as if many people had passed through it but none had decided to stay. Elsewhere shares some concepts with The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, but is not very similar otherwise. it's almost like fantasy or mythology, but still reads like realistic fiction.Young Jane Young – Los Angeles Public Library – OverDrive". Zevin has the ability to make you care about her creations within paragraphs of meeting them... whose fates I consistently worried about when I occasionally had to put the book aside. Financial Times And there will be other lives for a man you don't recognize, for a face in a mirror that is no longer yours, for the funerals of intimates, for shrinking, for teeth that fall out, for hair on your chin, for forgetting everything.
