Mark Edward Lewis (2011). China Between Empires: The Northern and Southern Dynasties. Harvard University Press. p.63. ISBN 9780674060357. Reassigned to Antarctica: Due to seeing the face of Lady Zhen during a private banquet, Cao Pi's friends and power base for his bid to be the crown prince is exiled to remote positions in the countryside. Historically, Xiahou Hui was poisoned by Sima Shi himself in 234 CE, during Cao Rui's reign. note Hui's early death and the fact that the Sima clan did not suffer any reprisals was a sign that the Sima clan's power was already threatening the Cao and Xiahou clans by that time. On the other hand, Sima Guang, author of the Zi Zhi Tong Jian, did not include the poisoning account in his work as he believed that when Xiahou Hui died, Sima Yi had just earned Cao Rui's trust, and showed no signs of disloyalty; his sons had no reasons to be disloyal as well. Also, Sima Shi later married a daughter of Wu Zhi and divorced her; his third wife is Yang Huiyu, a granddaughter of Cai Yong and sister of Yang Hu, a general during the late Wei/ early Jin era. The arc involving Zhuge Liang's Northern Expeditions largely adapted events from Romance. Most notably, the sixth expedition is entirely fictional. note Its inclusion is justified to a degree as it is meant to play up Sima Yi and Zhuge Liang's rivalry. In the "making-of" documentary, director Zhang Yongxin admitted that the Northern Expedition arc mainly drew from Romance, as Chinese audiences were expecting the classic scenes from Romance. Historically, both Shi and Zhao were first mentioned in events taking place after Zhuge Liang's death. In 225, Cao Pi advanced against the rival state of Eastern Wu, and entrusted Sima Yi with command over the capital in his absence. He compared Sima Yi to Xiao He, whose quiet contributions behind the battle lines earned him much praise. [2] Upon returning from the military expedition, Cao Pi once again praised his servant, saying "As I did battle in the east, you stayed in the capital and guarded our state against Shu in the west. When I go to battle in the west against Shu, I'll entrust you with defence against Wu in the east." Sima Yi was soon given the post of Lushang Shushi (録尚書事), which at that time held the same real power and responsibilities as Imperial Chancellor.

Blessed with great intelligence from a young age, Sima Yi is one of China's greatest strategists. Loyal only to himself, he schemes and plots to outwit Zhuge Liang and pave the way for his own family to usurp the throne and establish a new dynasty.Cai Zhong・ Cao Ang・ Cao Hong・ Cao Shuang・ Cao Xi・ Cao Zhang・ Chang Xi・ Chen Jiu・ Chen Lan・ Cheng Yi・ Dong Feng・ Dian Wei S・ Gao Ding・ Gao Sheng・ Guan Xing・ Guan Yu S・ Han Fu・ Han Hao・ Hong Ming・ Huan Lin・ Huan Zhi・ Huang Gai・ Huang Zu・ Huo Nu・ Ji Ben・ Jiang Gong・ Li Damu・ Li Huan・ Li Yu・ Ling Tong・ Liu Shao・ Lu Kang・ Pang De・ Qu Gong・ Quan Rou・ Sen Pei・ Song Yang・ Tao Ying・ Tuoba Liwei・ Wang Xi・ Wei Huang・ Wei Jie・ Wen Chou・ Xiahou Dun S・ Xianyu Yin・ Xin Ping・ Xu Chu S・ Xu Rong・ Xuan Fan・ Yang Feng・ You Tu・ Yu Qin・ Zang Ba・ Zao Zhi・ Zhang Fang・ Zhang Fu・ Zhang Guang・ Zhang Lu・ Zhang Yan S・ Zhao Du・ Zheng Yan・ Zheng Jiang S F・ Zou Lin・ Zuozi Hangba

In the collectible card game Magic: The Gathering there is a card named "Sima Yi, Wei Field Marshal", in the Portal Three Kingdoms set. Sima Lun was tutor to the prince at the time and had climbed his way into Empress Jia's inner circle during his time in Luoyang. He also commanded some troops in the capital as general of the Right Army and was known to be "avaricious and false" as well as "simple and stupid," heeding only the advice of Sun Xiu. Yu's arrest sparked outrage among many officials, and a few of them approached Lun for his military strength to overthrow Empress Jia. Zhong Hui and Deng Ai are portrayed as contemporaries when Zhong Hui wouldn't be born for another five years after Deng Ai's first appearance in the series. The series also gave Zhong an Age Lift. note Historically, Deng was about 28 years older than Zhong; in turn, Deng was 18 years younger than Sima Yi. Also, Zhong was portrayed as an adult during Cao Cao's reign as King of Wei; historically, he was born in 225 CE, near the end of Cao Pi's reign as emperor. Besides plot reasons, giving Zhong an Age Lift also deflects attention from the fact that Zhong Yao was in his 70s when Hui was born. Under Cao Pi's reign, his cousins and uncles all try to strengthen and protect their personal power, with numerous courtiers privately lampshading the possibility of another war of Eighteen Kingdoms. note Ironically, a full-blown civil war would only break out among the Sima clan after Sima Yan (Yi's grandson, known posthumously as Emperor Wu of Jin) died. Said civil war became known as the War of the Eight Princes and was a major factor in China becoming divided for more than two centuries. Sima Gui (Zizhang) had no son. He was succeeded by his nephew Sima Ji, a son of Sima Fu (Prince Cheng of Taiyuan). [35]
