About this deal

The original buddleia, b. davidii is a large, vigorous bush that can become quite straggly if not well maintained. It usually flowers in August. This variety is considered an invasive species as it self-seeds so easily. To prevent this plant spreading to surrounding areas in nature, make sure you deadhead it thoroughly to prevent it from spreading seed. Once established, most Buddleja cultivars are around 2 to 4 metres in size, although there are dwarf Buddleia varieties that defy the rule. For instance, the Lo and Behold Buddleia hybrids from the United States are under 1 metre in width and height. The petite Butterfly Bush varieties come in 4 different colors: white, blue, lilac, and purple. These dwarf buddlejas make excellent accent plants and do well in containers. When to plant Buddleia Shrubs Whatever shade you choose, these easy-care plants will create a striking focal point, especially in full bloom. Where to buy Buddleia One of the most common butterflies in the UK, Small Tortoiseshell, enjoying the nectar from Buddleja Royal Red. Butterfly Bush Royal Red Some shrubs may show signs of reverted growth or ‘sporting’. This is where random shoots of different leaves associated with the plant’s parentage begin to appear. Most commonly this is where plants with variegated leaves sprout pure green growths instead of variegated ones.

As garden shrubs, buddlejas are essentially 20th-century plants, with the exception of B. globosa which was introduced to Britain from southern Chile in 1774 and disseminated from the nursery of Lee and Kennedy, Hammersmith. [7] Several species are popular garden plants and are commonly known as "butterfly bushes", owing to their attractiveness to butterflies, and have become staples of the modern butterfly garden; they are also attractive to bees and moths. These plants will do well in most soils as long as they are reasonably free draining. They hate sitting in wet soil over winter. They do particularly well on chalky or lime soils. Fertilizer requirements Also known as Mongo or Petite Indigo, this showy shrub produces masses of blue-violet flowers that are particularly attractive to pollinators. This Butterfly Bush variety is suitable for small and large gardens alike, as it does not exceed 1.5 metres in height. Recipient of RHS Perfect for Pollinators badge. Miss Violet Butterfly BushNorman, E. (2000). Buddlejaceae. Flora Neotropica, Vol. 81. New York Botanical Garden, USA. ISSN 0071-5794 Hardy buddlejas can be planted at any time of year, but you’ll need to water them well if you plant them in summer in full leaf. Planting in spring is ideal as the warm, moist conditions will help them establish. Buddleias also have a preference for alkaline soil so you may have to add lime to acid soil to alter the pH. Otherwise they will survive in most conditions. The pink forms are excellent with darker flowers including the red scabious, Knautia macedonica, and dark scabious, like Scabiosa atropurpurea‘Ace of Spades’.

Plant buddleia in late spring, once the soil has had a chance to warm up – invest in a soil thermometer! Young-Mathews, Ann (2011). However, if you place a piece of paper beneath a branch and shake it you may see some tiny orange-red or green mites fall onto the paper. You can remove the mites with a strong jet of water or by thoroughly coating the leaves with an insecticidally soap. B. davidii ‘White Profusion’ has elegant spires of white flowers on a shrub that is nicely bushy. It can reach a height of 4 metres (13 feet).
