Highlights from Oprah and Debbie Ford's 'Super Soul Sunday' Conversation". OWN. July 10, 2012. Archived from the original on May 8, 2013 . Retrieved February 20, 2013. It's changed the way I view people in a way I never thought possible. I now see people I dislike as my teachers - people who are brought to me to show me parts of myself I need to accept. And that has had a profound and completely amazing effect on my relationship with those people. All of a sudden, the tension lifted... and we got along better. As children, we are chiefly taught the importance of striving to be “good”— good behaviour is often reinforced and rewarded while “bad” behaviour is punished (to put it simplistically). It is especially in childhood that we are most vulnerable to being exposed to messages from authority figures that there are qualities and character traits which are labelled with a “negative” connotation.

We know the shadow by many names: alter ego, lower self, the dark twin, repressed self, id. Carl Jung once said that the shadow "is the person you would rather not be." But even if you choose to hide your dark side, it will still cast a shadow, according to author Debbie Ford. Rather than reject the seemingly undesirable parts of ourselves, Ford offers advice on how to confront our shadows. Only by owning every aspect of yourself can you achieve harmony and "let your own light shine," she explains. "The purpose of doing shadow work, is to become whole. To end our suffering. To stop hiding ourselves from ourselves. Once we do this we can stop hiding ourselves from the rest of the world."

For those interested in shadow work, “Games People Play” is a helpful resource for identifying patterns and behaviors rooted in our shadow selves. Perhaps you know someone who is a giving person for example..someone who always puts others first. Never in your wildest dreams would you ever associate them to be selfish, self-centred, and focussed on themselves. It simply defies logic. If this interests you, her other book, “ Awakening the Heroes Within” will probably appeal to you as well. Debbie Ford, author of 'The Dark Side of the Light Chasers,' dies". Ford also points out that our "so-called faults" are sometimes simply over-amplified qualities and can therefore be dialled down. Debbie Ford guides us past the self-punishing patterns that often bind us. Her ideas are exceptionally compelling.” Surrender is a gift that you can give yourself. It's an act of faith. It's saying that even though I can't see where this river is flowing, I trust it will take me in the right direction.” The Shadow Effect: Illuminating the Hidden Power of Your True Self by Deepak Chopra, Debbie Ford, and Marianne Williamson.

Caraballo takes a holistic approach to shadow work that includes mindfulness practices, creative expression, and self-care techniques – which makes it a great resource for practical implementations.Dark Side of the Light Chasers, by the late Debbie Ford, is a challenging, sometimes confrontational book. It gets you thinking about aspects of your personality that you don't own up to—and might not want to. And since Caraballo is a therapist, he provides helpful guidance on how to work through trauma and navigate difficult emotions that may come up during the shadow work process. Geldenhuys offers guidance on how to identify your shadow self, how to work through difficult emotions and patterns, and how to integrate your shadow side into your everyday life. And since the book is short and to the point, you can easily read it in one sitting and start putting the lessons into practice right away.
