About this deal

Equipped with two 120mm intake fans and one 120mm exhaust fan plus externally removable filters on its top and side, keeping everything cool and dust-free is as easy as in any SilverStone premium chassis. The most notable feature of this case is the half-height PCI-E slots, which allow for the installation of multiple low-profile PCI cards. It is an ultra-compact mini-ITX computer case that won’t take up much space on your desk, and it is built with no compromises for durability, similar to our picks for rackmount PC cases. This sentence on page 2 followed by a picture that explains very well that fully modular PSUs here are almost a no-go here. A lockable front door is useful for server security and a nice pair of included fans, 1x 120mm intake, and 1x 120mm exhaust fans, that run softly but deliver blistering airflow to hot components inside.

While I know not everyone has access to a 3D printer or has the time and patience to spend well over 200 hours printing and assembling their own DIY NAS case, what other thoughts do you guys have on my favorite DIY NAS cases? If I do go SSDs I was actually considering getting another Norco PCI one becuase the Silverstone case has two PCIe brackets.Any time a disk was hot-pulled under FreeNAS it would re-index the entire SATA bus, making it appear as if every device had just been pulled and re-inserted. Another item one can probably see is that the cables are long, and we have not yet installed a PSU, nor the SATA cables for the backplane.

First-party app development still pales in comparison to bigger NAS brands (though popular third-party tools that already exist in the market are supported and available to download) and in terms of software, this system is still a little underwhelming, if very functional. I recommend RAID-5 or RAID-6 because they provide the best redundancy and speed (I use RAID-5 as you still retain 66% disk space compared to 50% for RAID-6).

The connection between the backplane and the motherboard or the host control card is only a SATA data transmission cable.
