About this deal

I particularly liked how the mirror was portrayed as a 'newspaper', something very relevant to society today and the prince, now a reporter. The writer/illustrator has thought long and hard about the adaptation of the book and this shows in the imagery used in the book. Those who reviewed the 1902 Macbeth Gallery exhibition evidently did not single out Snow in New York for discussion, but they did react to Henri’s bold technique. Arthur Hoeber complained that “not infrequently Mr. Henri leaves off where the real difficulties of picture-making begin.” [5] [5] Williams, William James. A Heritage of American Paintings from the National Gallery of Art. New York, 1981: color repro. 167, 199, 201.

Chambers, Bruce. “Robert Henri’s Street Scene with Snow (57th Street, N.Y.C.): An Ideal of City ‘in Snow Effect.’” Yale University Art Gallery Bulletin 39 (Winter 1986): 30-39; 37-38, fig. 7. Lest we forget, the city itself is also a character. Having lived in NYC for eleven years, I’ve always been very touchy about how it’s portrayed in books for kids. When contemporary books are filled with alleyways it makes me mighty suspicious. Old timey fare gets a pass, though. Clever too of Phelan to set the book during the winter months. As Snow says at one point, “snow covers everything and makes the entire world beautiful . . . This city is beautiful, too. It has its own magic.” So we get Art Deco interiors, and snow covered city tops seen out of huge plate glass windows. We get theaters full of gilt and splendor and the poverty of Hoovervilles in the park, burning trashcans and all. It felt good. It felt right. It felt authentic. I could live there again. Left to fend for herself in the wild city, Snow White finds work singing with the seven jazz-men and, discovered by a handsome music reporter, becomes the Belle of New York City once more.I know this graphic novel is getting a lot of praise for the illustrations but, unfortunately, even this aspect of Snow White didn't impress me that much. this is a retelling of snow white that u really shouldn’t call a retelling because it’s more of a “resetting” because, like, the only thing they really changed is the setting. that's literally it. like, sure, why not. Access-restricted-item true Addeddate 2020-06-18 05:01:18 Boxid IA1842524 Camera Sony Alpha-A6300 (Control) Collection_set printdisabled External-identifier The umpteenth retelling of Snow White, this time cast during the onset of the Great Depression. While the art is okay, the story has a groan inducing number of awkward turns and silly choices as it works too hard to merge the original tale with cliches from the Depression. This is a very short illustrated picture book in which the tale of Snow White is relocated to 1920’s New York, (think Great Gatsby era) and the illustrations are absolutely fantastic.

we do love books that can be read in less than an hour. especially when we haven’t read anything for, like, a week. An illustrated collection of fifteen tales from the brothers Grimm, retold for younger readers. Stories include Hansel and Gretel, Sleeping Beauty, Rumpelstiltskin, Tom Thumb and The Frog PrincE. Discouraged by the fact that his New York cityscapes failed to sell and increasingly attracted to figurative art, Henri ceased to paint urban subjects and resolved to become a portraitist late in 1902. In retrospect, the expressive intensity and painterly fluency of Snow in New York qualify it as one of Henri’s most accomplished works from this early period in his career. It exemplifies his advice that students should strive to capture “the romance of snow-filled atmosphere and the grimness of a house.” [10] [10] This is a really interesting take on the traditional tale, and I felt that it was quite intriguing to change the time period to the 1920's, and revolve the events around a different setting. However, I do feel that the ending of the text was somewhat anti-climatic and did not give a reasonable explanation for Snow White's revival. I had been really enjoying the twist up until then. Actually I came across this book while I was browsing something else, and the summary intrigued me. Snow White isn't a favorite fairy tale of mine (that honor goes to Beauty and the Beast), so to see it combined with a historical period I am extremely interested in??? HELL YEAHAmerican Paintings: An Illustrated Catalogue. National Gallery of Art, Washington, 1980: 174, repro. I was excited to receive this book (I won it in an Armchair BEA giveaway so no pressure to review), because I have grown to love the graphical novel media and who doesn't like fairy tales reinterpreted? Enter or exit from Constitution Avenue, 4th Street, or 7th Street. The Madison Drive entrance is currently closed. I received a copy of Snow White from Walker Books Australia to review. I love fairy-tale retellings so I was excited to read a graphic novel retelling. I still need to read the original fairy-tale though… Paintings other than French in the Chester Dale Collection. National Gallery of Art, Washington, 1965: 47, repro., color repro. as frontispiece, as New York Street in Winter. The Snow White fairy tale receives a 1920s Art Deco treatment in this beautiful retelling by Fiona French. Now a beautiful socialite, Snow White falls foul of her celebrity-loving stepmother who the tabloids call 'the classiest dame in New York'.Robert Henri’s energetic but stark image of New York in the snow deviates from impressionist urban snow scenes of the period in several ways: it represents a common side street rather than a major avenue; there is nothing narrative, anecdotal, or prettified about the image; the straightforward, one-point perspective composition is devoid of trivial details; the exceptionally daring, textured brushwork resembles a preparatory study rather than a finished oil painting; and the somber palette creates a dark, oppressive atmosphere. In his Record Book, Henri described Snow in New York as, “N.Y. down E. on 55th St. from 6 Ave. Brown houses at 5 Ave. storm effect. snow. wagon to right.”

For an interesting comparison, see Manet’s Effect of Snow on Petit-Montrouge, 1870, oil on canvas, National Museum Cardiff. The gloomy ambience, enlivened by only a few touches of red, is indicative of the artist’s essentially realist proclivities. A modern version of the classic fairy tale. Snow White lives in New York and is a singer with seven jazzmen One of today’s most accomplished illustrators has taken one of the best-known fairy tales and given it a startlingly updated setting in the ‘Big Apple’ of the 1920s, except that in this case the poisoned fruit is a cherry. The text is straightforward in style at the same time as being sophisticated in meaning, which gives it appeal for older readers. Samuel Swift, New York Mail & Express, April 8, 1902; the Brooklyn Eagle, April 4, 1902; both quoted in Bennard B. Perlman, Robert Henri: His Life and Art (New York, 1991), 49. Nevertheless, Snow in New York was one of only two pictures that sold (the second has not been identified). The wavy, watercolor art of the book is beautiful and creates a dream-like atmosphere. In some scenes, it was frustrating because I was unsure of what I was seeing or why. But, dreams are like that, I guess. On the whole, it works beautifully.

I was convinced for about 2/3rds of this book that it would be a 3-star read, but it won me over in the end. A sharply witty update of the traditional fairy story. Fiona French's stylish, twenties illustrations are full of subtle visual jokes, which will delight older readers.' ( Children's Books of the Year)
