About this deal

The hope was that a new publisher and a new protagonist might help the new Kick-Ass succeed where the original struggled. This is a brand new (though familiar) world for Kick-Ass, and hopefully this new take on the universe and a new home at Image comics proves successful for Patience. This book does feel and look more cinematic than the original Kick Ass, but doesnt seem to have as strong of a start as a comic book itself. KICK-ASS IS BACK—ready to wipe out the city's criminal lowlives, destroy its gangs, and save its communities from decay. It's been a decade since teen comic-book nerd Dave Lizewski donned his homemade Kick-Ass costume and took to the streets of NYC to fight the city's hardest criminals.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.I found it pretty unique and loved the scene int he warehouse with Big Daddy taking out all the bads. Designing a suit for himself and taking the name "Kick-Ass," Dave decides to make his dreary existence more exciting - and maybe even help some people in the process.

For all that the book aims to show us ordinary people playing at being superheroes, the violence is often stylized and exaggerated to the point where any sense of reality is washed away. Patience to an extent is a greater fulfillment on the promise of the series than Dave ever was, a protagonist with heart and a fierceness that's easy to root for. It might have been successful if Millar had bothered to delve a little deeper into the inner life of his protagonist and brought to light something that felt half as true as Dave Lizewski did at his best.

But with no special powers and outmatched by New York City's most hardened criminals, Kick-Ass might be in for a little more than he bargained for. This is a remarkable start to a series that is shockingly fresh despite revolving around a very basic premise. Kick-Ass is very much about the rude intersection of superhero comics and the real world, yet there's little about Romita's art style that screams realism.

While not exploring unfamiliar territory, Millar, Romita, and team deliver a very strong issue, where script and art come together to tell an interesting story with even better characters. While one of the more recognizable Millarworld properties, Kick-Ass has never really lived up to its potential as a story exploring what happens when ordinary people attempt to become costumed vigilantes. Even though it took quite a license with military reality, its the devil is in the details approach to storytelling is still worth it.Relive what happens when Dave Lizewski asks himself "How come nobody's ever become a superhero before?
