About this deal

The Battle of Pelennor Fields Scenarios and Profiles book includes four Narrative Play Scenarios that gradually build up the forces on each side to ease players into the Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game. The full profiles for all the units included in the box set are also included in this book. Riders of Rohan: horse-masters beyond compare, renowned for their great skill and bravery. 4 are armed with spear and shield, 4 with bows, 2 with swords and shields, and 2 with axes and shields; The modular ruins are really the star of The Lord of the Rings Battle of Osgiliath (Image credit: Warhammer Community) Happily, the new additions fit into this lineup well despite making full use of modern advances for more dynamic poses. I was a particular fan of Faramir vaulting over ruins into action.

As a boxed product then, Battle of Pelennor Fields is a superb value proposition and an excellent game in its own right, with the potential to delight newcomers and please hobbyists looking to expand their collection considerable in one fell swoop. The quality of the miniatures is exceptional, whilst the written material is literally second to none in either its clarity or attention to detail. The inclusion of dice, measuring rulers and tokens proves that Games Workshop continues to refine its boxed offerings with each step. Overall, Middle Earth Strategy Battles is a superb system and Battle of Pelennor Fields is the best way to take your first steps into it. PUT YOUR ART ON FULL DISPLAY—While each Scene Card is a playable Magic card, this box also contains 6 Art Cards featuring the same art without any game text obscuring the view, allowing you to appreciate the full scene in all its glory on the included display easel WITNESS GANDALF IN PELENNOR FIELDS—Piece together these 6 Scene Cards to glimpse Gandalf the White as he charges to Faramir’s aid, keeping the dreaded Ringwraiths at bay

Terrain

The Mount Doom scene is included in the bundle and Bundle: Gift Edition boxes, as well as non-foil versions in collector boosters.

In this article we're going to do a complete unboxing and look at the miniatures and rulebooks from the Battle of Pelennor Fields Core Se,t and we will follow up later with some Battle Reports on how our forces fared. This article will be quite picture heavy, so brace yourselves! Battle of Pelennor Fields Unboxing In short, The Lord of the Rings Battle of Osgiliath doesn't change any of what makes the game work so well. This is more of an addition to the range than a revamp; it still uses the same updated rules from Battle of Pelennor Fields. Indeed, I was able to swan in after a literal decade away and get right into the swing of things with minimal effort. The What Next adds almost everything left in the box, and turns it into a major engagement, with the second one recommending additional miniatures (Osgiliath veterans for Gondor and another hero for the orcs). Victory conditions are a straight Faramir vs Troll, two fancy models enter, one fancy model leaves. Many thanks to Games Workshop for providing a free early review copy of the new Battle Of Osgiliath boxed set. The new MESBG starter set is here! Following in the footsteps of the Battle of Pelennor Fields box, Osgiliath also brings a mix of old and brand new minis – now with an updated rulebook and some snazzy new terrain. The centrepiece scenario of the box, this lets you bring out all the toys and use them, and has monsters and heroes running around. It’s asymmetric, but LotR is so often a narrative game.

Fowler: It’s always surprising (and nice) to see Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game get support. This has been a pretty spectacular year for the game, especially considering that at this point it feels as though essentially everything is covered (save for updating resin and metal models). 2022 saw a number of Forgeworld splash releases, a sizeable FAQ, plastic Elrond, a refresh for Glorfindel, a round of army boxes, and now… a new starter box. Fowler: I’ve found Thundercloud’s Going Beyond the Battlehosts article to be very helpful for a neophyte, especially as there is some faction overlap there! Personally, I opted for a Mordor Battleforce, Morannon command blister, and a Fell Beast – to really dive into the battle the box is named after!Battle of Pelennor Fields: The Lord of the Rings is a starter set containing 84 miniatures. Prepare to enter the world of Middle-Earth and recreate battle scenes as King Théoden and the Riders of Rohan make their arrival. Defend the city of Minas Tirith and take control over the forces of Evil and cause war upon the kingdom of Gondor! The four different scenes in the scene box collections aren’t included in the main set or in set, draft, or collector boosters.

Warriors of Rohan: foot-soldiers who make up the rank and file of the armies of Rohan. 4 models are armed with bows, 4 with hand weapons and shields, and 4 with spears and shields; This box includes the complete Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game Rules Manual, information regarding Open, Narrative and Matched Play and Middle-earth miniatures. Find everything from the basic rules of movement through to handling siege engines and even casting magical powers. There is also beautifully painted armies to help provide inspiration for your own collections! Battle of Pelennor Fields ComponentsEach weapon in the set has a different size… with some of them especially appropriate. Sting is 4″, which is how far Hobbits can move, while Gimli’s axe is 5″ long (the typical move for a Dwarf). Even Gandalf’s staff is 12″ long, which just so happens to be the range of most Magical Powers. The book then provides an incredible 22 new Narrative Play Scenarios. A Narrative Play Scenario in Lord of the Rings: Middle-Earth Strategy Battle Game is a pre-determined battle scenario for two opposing sides to take part in. What's so cool about these scenarios is just how descriptive they are. They tell you exactly how to populate terrain on the map, and which specific units are included in each scenario. Instead of saying "This is a 750 point match," the scenario lists out which specific heroes and warriors take part in the battle, even down to how many men hold swords vs. spears. The scenarios included in Defence of the North range from the first encounter between Brand, King of Dale and the Easterlings, the Siege of Erebor, the Wood Elf crossing of the Anduin, and even a scenario where the Spider Queen and her legions take on invading orcs (in this scenario, the Spider Queen's forces are listed as 'Good,' the quotation marks denoting the stretching of the term). Each of these scenarios offers an engaging challenge for both the Good and Evil side at war, and their varied goals and map setups really change up the game. Lord of the Rings: Middle-Earth Strategy Battle Game Dragon Emperor And Warriors storm Erebor. Image: Games Workshop Lord of the Rings: Middle-Earth Strategy Battle Game Defence of the North is a new sourcebook for the game system, and comes with a lot of resources to freshen up your game as it focuses on the Northern theater of war during both the Battle of Five Armies and the War for the Ring. The book begins with a very brief description of the events that took place in the northern lands of Middle-Earth, from the desolation of Smaug to Galadriel's destruction of Dol Guldur (and everything in between). Lord of the Rings: Middle-Earth Strategy Battle Game Defence of the North. Image: Games Workshop As previously stated, this box contains a mix of mostly old models and a few new ones. The Mordor side of the house gets a new Gothmog mini – with on foot and mounted options. The good guys get Faramir, Madril, and Damrod. These models are a nice mix of old and new design aesthetics; solid detail, and mercifully easy to put together compared to come other modern GW kits. I thoroughly enjoyed painting Gothmog, and it’s definitely motivated me to start working on the rest of the box!
