About this deal

He died during 1967 after a long career as an author of novels, biographies, histories, children's books and science fiction stories. The brothers are separated, for you see Edward is a bit on the plump side and Terry is as thin as a rake and through no choice of their own they are drawn into war between the two camps.

Discover timeless favourites from The Jungle Book and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland to modern classics such as The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. It was a wonderfully droll account of war between two nations over the silliest and most nonsensical of philosophies and I was terribly impressed by the moral admonishment it contained about the eternal senselessness of human warfare. This book hasn't dated and I am enjoying reading it to my own children now that I'm a 'Thinnipuff' or a 'Fattifer' adult - depending on your point of view. I hope you find you have copy lying around somewhere so read it and enjoy it – but I hope it is a copy with the Bruller illustrations! That being said I've forgotten quite a bit about what it was even about, and on rereading it I know why.Great-aunt Ruth had never enjoyed children of her own but was really expert in seeking out the very newest and best books to give her many young relatives for birthdays and Christmas. Very sadly she did not survive many years into my life and the flow of wonderful books, at least from that source, dried up all too soon. I would recommend this book to a confident reader in KS2, it could also be used as a theme book when looking at issues of equality. The quality of writing and plot are sufficient to warrent a wide adult readership as well, and, like all classics, it will never go out of date.

Incredibly prolific French author Maurois' children's fantasy about the Double brothers, one fat and one thin, who slide down a banister and find themselves in another world with 2 countries, one populated with fat people, the other with thin who are at war with one another. It's a middle-grade chapter book from the early 1940s and always reminded me a little of the Phantom Tollbooth, no idea why.

The story offers endless possibilities for discussion in the classroom around the subject of politics and international conflicts, but most of all it will be enjoyed for its ingenious plot and zany characterisation. An adorable little satire with two message that are just as relevant now as they were almost a hundred years ago.Maurois' lavish descriptions and satirical humour had us enthralled and helped stimulate my passion for reading. Written in 1930 the two nations are apparently based on France and Germany and are no less antagonistic, but are also shown to be complimentary, even symbiotic.
