The song is sung from the perspective of the mermaid, giving her a voice which she is so often denied, but still presenting her as a strange and dangerous sea creature. The captain tried to explain that Mathew looked quite happy with his life, but the people wouldn’t listen. One of these local men was Mathew Trewella, a handsome young fellow with the best singing voice in the village. Traces of the legend appear to have permeated many aspects of modern life in the area; there is even a local ice cream company named ‘Moomaid of Zennor’.

Interestingly, he did not include the story in his first volume (1870) of stories from West Cornwall but in the second, a few years later. This does not have to be achieved by forming a deal with an octopus-legged sea witch, as in the 1989 Disney film The Little Mermaid, but derives from some magical power which the mermaid herself possesses. His stories were longer than similar versions published by others and reflected the way the old story tellers embellished the basic tales to increase the entertainment value.
