The song is sung from the perspective of the mermaid, giving her a voice which she is so often denied, but still presenting her as a strange and dangerous sea creature. The captain tried to explain that Mathew looked quite happy with his life, but the people wouldn’t listen. One of these local men was Mathew Trewella, a handsome young fellow with the best singing voice in the village. Traces of the legend appear to have permeated many aspects of modern life in the area; there is even a local ice cream company named ‘Moomaid of Zennor’.
