About this deal

As one of the great communicators of honey bee science, Tom Seeley has written a superb account . . . This is a book for every beekeeper and anyone interested in the natural world."—Stephen Fleming, Bee Craft

I was really drawn to Tom Seeley’s The Lives of Bees. He IS the bee keeper’s bee keeper."—Ira Flatow, Science FridayAn incredibly rich and complex examination of the interior life of bees, well-suited to those with a deep and abiding interest in scientific experimentation and its subsequent nomenclatures. I am not one of them. While the subject is utterly fascinating, I found my mind wandering all too often as I struggled to maintain interest in its presentation. That said, the importance of understanding the subjectively conscious life of bees is not lost on me. I simply have little interest in the extreme amount of detail that Chittka presents. The book does not feel extraordinarily accessible to the scientific layman, and I believe it suffers as a result. Bees may visit upwards towards 1000 flowers and each flower has it's unique mechanics in respect to the location of nectar and the perils that may befall one who is not knowledgeable.

Originally a book about an adventurous bee who leaves the hive and befriends other insects, this much-loved character has grown to have her own comic strip, and international anime TV series. A beautiful kid's educational book about bees with a crucial message: not only does it inform and educate about an issue that is a real threat, but it also delivers it in a way that is gripping for all ages. The book uses a step-by-step approach to explaining the art and science of becoming a good beekeeper. It’s well illustrated and easy to follow too, just like the car manuals! The Cat in the Hat introduces children to the world of bees and where honey comes from, with his usual entertaining style. Thanks to our expert bee panel If you’re a fan of the famous detective you might be interested to know that yes, he actually took up beekeeping when he retired!

If you can get over the inaccuracy that this character is a ‘he’ when in reality worker bees are female, this colourful story teaches kids of 2 years and older a big lesson about sharing. Bees also have their own dance language which they use to represent distance, direction, and duration, to tell hive members where to go to find flower patches.

Ted Benton is the author of several books about bumblebees, which has led to him being jokily labelled a "bombologist". He is also Professor of Sociology at the University of Essex, and points out that bees like humans, live in colonies, with a highly developed division of labour and cooperation.Beekeeping isn’t something that should be undertaken without a lot of thought and planning. Where will you position the hive? Can you dedicate enough time to keep the bees healthy? Who will look after the bees when you go on an extended holiday? Seeley is truly a wonderful science writer, and one of the best at synthesizing information from honey bee studies conducted across the globe . . . His ability to communicate his science, and the science of others into common themes makes his books a pleasure to read for both academics and general readers alike."—Cory S. Sheffield, Bulletin of the Entomological Society of Canada From siting hives and reassuring the neighbours, to combating interference from wind, artificial light and predators, this one-stop reference takes the urban beekeeper from set-up to first honey harvest. well shoot. first off let me say a huge thank u to all those who have died trying to figure out how a bee's brain worked. it was actually just two guys but maybe there were more that didnt get recorded. bless them and rip.
