About this deal
The Rising is a fast, furious, can’t-turn-away thrill ride that will suck readers in just like a video game. The basic premise revolves around one simple question: What if Bram Stoker's Dracula had not been a work of fiction? He grew up in the north-east of England, is scared of spiders, and lives in east London with his girlfriend.
As well as great back story, Will Hill is also highly skilled at other aspects of the craft of writing.
The only exception is The Rising which doesn't open with a quote from Dracula, but from Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Jamie is brought to Department 19, where he is pulled into a secret organization responsible for policing the supernatural, founded more than a century ago by Abraham Van Helsing and the other survivors of Dracula. Violence and paranoia spread around the globe and, when it finally comes, Dracula's opening move is more vicious than anyone could have imagined.
While I did like a lot of things about this story—especially Larissa—I tend to look for different things in most of the books I read. However, I did not give in to temptation and instead resorted to posting a very short, teaser piece about the book.It is a complex tale linking several parallel strands; the main character, Jamie Carpenter is coming to terms with the death of his mentor and the fact that his mother was ‘turned’ into a vampire at the end of the first book. From there, Jamie is taken by Frankenstein (yes, that Frankenstein) to Department 19, a secret sect of the British government that deals with supernatural.
Matt Browning is working to find a cure for vampirism and Larissa Kinley is on a secondment in NS9, the Amerian counterpart to Blacklight. With Dracula slowly rising, the supernatural departments all over the world have got their hands full. Gripping, gory, and violent, this isn't for the faint-hearted - but it's also clever, and moving, and wittily done. After the terrifying attack on Lindisfarne at the end of the first book, Jamie, Larissa and Kate are recovering at Department 19 headquarters, waiting for news of Draculas stolen ashes. This riveting second book in the Department 19 series is packed with cutting-edge gadgets, international locales, and daredevil action that tumbles ferociously across the page—perfect for fans of Darren Shan and Anthony Horowitz. The Department 19 book series by Will Hill includes books Department 19, The Rising, Battle Lines, and several more. It didn’t seem to bother me when I was younger and reading about girls in Christopher Pike’s books, but it does now.
