About this deal

Oiling is a leather finishing process of applying oils such as castor oil, jojoba oil, Shea-butter, mink oil, neatsfoot oil like this neatfoot compounds, groundnut oil or any vegetable oil on the surface of leather to make is soft and supple.

Note that it is important that excess binder that may build up around areas of stitching should be wiped away before it dries. Brush colored leather is a type of leather that has pigment applied via a brush. This creates a unique pattern of color on each piece. The variations might be in gradient, blending, or overall tone. Bruch colored leather is nice for finished pieces that seek a distinct and creative visual appeal. Degrained Leather After allowing the pigment layer to dry, a protective topcoat is applied. Semi-aniline leather is substantially more durable and ideal for hard-use goods than aniline leather due to the pigment and coat. Pull-up Holes should usually be less than 5” to be considered acceptable within a number two grade hide. Grain defects should also be no larger than approximately 1 ft. sq. in coverage area. Approximately 15%-20% of hides shipped to tanners have a number two hide grade. Leather Hide Grade – Number Three A must in the automotive industry where rub fastness is crucial. This product will greatly increase the life span of the leather.Wait 30 minutes for the colourant to thoroughly dry and then proceed to spray the leather. Set up your spray gun or airbrush and then spray the leather at a comfortable distance, not to over apply the colour. It is best to practice a bit on a piece of paper to get the hang of spraying first. Spray the colourant on in thin layers. This avoids runs and so makes for a nicer finish. Usually, before applying lacquer finishes, an important tip is to apply a thin coating of liquid wax finish. However, when water-soluble dyes are used prior to lacquering, the result is always awesome. On the other hand, it doesn’t work well with acrylic paint finishes.

It is recommended to let the dye dry after each application, before applying the next layer. Application Techniques It is then finished with a thin protective coating to help prevent fast wear of the leather, or any other staying or discoloration from showing up on the surface. This can be a visually appealing dye approach, since it does allow the original surface of the leather to show through. Semi Aniline Leather When leathers are made, they can be finished in many different ways. These methods yield leathers that can be used for a variety of different purposes. Variations can include texture, flexibility, color, and finish. Let’s explore some of the major types of finished leather. Aniline Leather Finishes are the topcoats and the last things you put on your leather to either preserve its dyes or treat the leather. Some finishes are more water-resistant than others.Once all cleaned up, you can relax and enjoy your newly dyed leather piece 🙂 Popular Leather Dyeing Products Number one hides are top grade hides. They generally have no major surface imperfections, holes, or cuts. If there are holes approximately 3-4 inches from the edge of the hides, and they can be trimmed away, they won’t affect the overall grade. About 80% of hides shipped to tanners should be a number one grade. Leather Hide Grade – Number Two Bonded leather is like the scrapple or hot dogs of leather; it is made up of leather scraps that are finely shredded and bonded together using polyurethane or latex onto a fiber mesh or sheet. The amount of leather in the actual mix can vary greatly (from 10%-90%), and thus affect the functional and aesthetic properties of the finished product. While this sanding makes it more visually appealing, it also removes a lot of the strength and some water-repellent qualities of full grain leather. This we begin to see a tradeoff between leather strength, and leather look and softness. Excellent! The leather has been cleaned, dyed, and finished, you’re all done! After the finish has dried you can clean up.

One characteristic of antique finishes is that it doesn’t give a waterproof finish and may require to be given an extra polish when the antique finish substance dry. What’s the Difference between Finishing and Finishes? Dyeing on dry leather is a very common method. The dye is applied directly to the surface of the material, and is pulled into fibers. It is usually easier to dye dry, especially for those new to dyeing. Since there is no water involved, one can see exactly where the dye has been applied and how much is needed to result in an even coat. Aniline leather is a type of leather dyed only with soluble dyes. They allow the natural surface of the leather to show through (blemishes, cuts, etc.). Generally only higher quality leathers are used since they have nice, even surfaces. Number three hides generally have five or more holes or large cuts within the hide, ideally within a generally straight line. This would allow them to be cut around later, still yielding a sizable area of usable hide.Like many other leather finishes, Hand-rubbed leather is also known by another name. Hand-rubbed leather is also known as antiqued leather due to its aged appearance. The finish is applied exactly the same way as the colourant. When you spray the Leather Finish onto the leather, make sure it is dry before spraying on a second coat. Like the Leather Colourant, you can use a hairdryer to speed up this process. There is a lot of polish on the market but a few weeks ago I tried the Fiebing’s carnauba creme and I find it to be the best all-round polish that will give your leather products a very nice smell and supple especially after you have applied and given the leather a gentle buff. A single cut or hole over 6” can be allowed. There might also be grain defects, or a series of closely-located smaller holes that comprise a surface area larger than 1 ft. sq. In general, number three graded hides should at least yield a 50% usable surface area. Before polishing the surface, dirt, dust, or debris are removed with a clean brush or rug using saddle soap especially if the dirt is major. In this case, the leather product is allowed to dry thoroughly before the finish is applied.
