About this deal

Kate Phillips, the director of unscripted for the BBC, said that it had been “a real privilege” to be given such “extraordinary behind-the-scenes access” to the first months of the King’s reign. The coronation album will be produced by world-renowned classical record producer, Anna Barry, who has produced over 500 recordings of distinction over 35 years.

After the death of Queen Elizabeth II, The King had to lead his family and the country in mourning. At the same time, he had to embrace his destiny on the most famous throne in the world. A BBC documentary charting the first year of the King’s reign will include unseen footage of Coronation rehearsals and interviews with members of the Royal family.

With unrivalled insights from many of those involved, as well as moments of great poignancy and humour, this film gives a unique perspective on the inner workings behind a defining moment which marks a new era in the history of the monarchy. It will be exclusively recorded at Westminster Abbey and released by Decca Records, with an official photograph from the day as the cover art. Footage posted on social media appeared to show Graham Smith, the chief executive of the group, being arrested by police alongside five other demonstrators wearing T-shirts that read "Not My King."

Kate Phillips, BBC Director of Unscripted, says: “It’s a real privilege to be given such extraordinary behind the scenes access to the first year of King Charles’ reign. It is a remarkable time in history and this documentary will offer a unique insight into King Charles and Queen Camilla, and the preparation and planning leading to their coronation - a momentous ceremony watched by millions around the world.” A coronation is a customary event that marks the beginning of a monarch's reign over their Kingdom. Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II and her funeral on Monday, September 19, 2022, King Charles' coronation is the next big event that the Royal Family will begin planning following the official mourning period of the late monarch. When will King Charles' coronation take place? She said: “This will be a truly historic recording, capturing a glorious range of music from across centuries and continents, reflecting the world-wide interest in our traditions, covering multiple locations in the wonderful acoustic of Westminster Abbey, and involving an unprecedented technical plan to present the entire experience to the world on the day itself. The ceremony will feature a range of musical styles and performers, blending tradition, heritage and ceremony with the new musical voices of today to reflect the King's life-long support of music and the arts. She added: “It is a remarkable time in history and this documentary will offer a unique insight into King Charles and Queen Camilla, and the preparation and planning leading to their coronation – a momentous ceremony watched by millions around the world.”Inside Westminster Abbey, aristocrats, celebrities and leaders from a variety of Britain's political parties arrived ahead of the ceremony. The congregation included singers such as Lionel Richie and Katy Perry, who will perform at a concert organized to celebrate the coronation this weekend.
