About this deal

Mix enough browns in with your citrus waste and other greens, to ensure optimized moisture content and structure. The Westland citrus potting mix provides the perfect environment to produce healthy citrus plants with abundant fruits. Fill in around the edges with more Citrus Potting Mix ensuring the top feeder roots are covered with 2cm of fresh potting mix. Sow seeds fresh from ripe fruit at a depth of about 1cm (½in) in John Innes seed or multi-purpose compost at a temperature of 16°C (61°F).

Some people also say the acidic environment that citrus can create in a compost pile kills off worms and microorganisms, and should thus be avoided entirely. Green compost is compostable items that contain either nitrogen or protein, both of which are necessary for a healthy compost heap.

This creates more surface area for the microbes and bacteria to work on, speeding up the decomposition process. While this takes longer, it requires a lot less effort since you or simply leaving the pile to decompose naturally. Secondly, there is truth to worms and microorganisms disliking the acidity created by the addition of citrus in a compost mix.

By building soil fertility and plant health, it allows you to grow nutrient-dense food at home with ease. We are able to arrange for a collection if that is easier for you, just get in touch and we can help with this. If you place something the worms don’t tolerate into the Subpod, they will move away into the surrounding soils and leave it to the bacteria and microbes to take care of.Specially formulated with the optimum balance of NPK nutrition and added iron to create the ideal nutritional balance for orange, lemon and all citrus plants. Those strangely coloured leaves may also have been caused by cold (if the plants were behind curtains on cold nights, say) or by a lack of fertiliser. Even if you don’t rinse, microbes are amazing things and will decompose almost anything, even those chemicals.

Depending on the tastes of your household, you’ve probably got a range of citrus fruits at any given time. This improves its water retention capabilities and aeration too, allowing for oxygen to reach helpful microorganisms. This is a great way to make sure that your composting mixture attracts no rats, voles, gophers, raccoons, or any other scavenger. Place Leveington® Citrus Compost in the bottom of the pot and put the root ball on the top of this layer. Citrus plants like a more acidic soil, which is what you get with this ready-made citrus specific potting mix.

I make my own compost, but have been told I should avoid citrus fruits because they make the compost too acidic and the worms hate this. Oranges are probably one of the most widely consumed citrus fruits and one of the best ones to compost. We’ll discuss these and other benefits further down, as well as teach you the correct methods for composting citrus. The wax on the fruit is mild enough not to affect your entire compost pile (because people have to come in contact with it too and may eat it) but strong enough to prevent the mold from growing on the surface of the citrus. Now its easier than ever to care for your plants with Miracle-Gro, no matter how big or small your need, or how small your space.
