The civil war as a background/side note is such a twist compared to other books set in this time frame. But, it did give me a glimpse of life in 19th century Mormon Utah, of which I wasn't particularly familiar. Having eliminated most of the Orphans in the program, the government will stop at nothing to eliminate the threat they see in Evan.

The raid was blamed on the Indians for years but in the end the truth comes out about the real murderers. On the one hand, he’s a simple man who lives by a code, which helps him survive and thrive off grid.Lowder does a great job of setting, and he creates believable characters who resonated with me long after the last page. Evan Smoak, AKA Orphan X, AKA The Nowhere Man, is back but finds himself not quite so irrepressible in the eighth novel in the Orphan X series by Gregg Hurwitz. The man who’d stolen Evan’s shot had a flat metal lip stud the size of a quarter, with a rune stamped on it; Evan hadn’t brushed up on his Icelandic runes in a few decades, but he believed that it was the symbol for protection in battle.
