Don Papa Rum claims to be the ‘world’s first single island rum from the Philippines’, and was created by Stephen Carroll (a former Remy Cointreau executive) for the Bleeding Heart Company. The brand is inspired in part by the legendary figure of Papa Isio, a charismatic leader who fought for independence in the Philippine Revolution of the late 19th Century, and also the spirit, culture and ecosystem of the ethereal Philippine island of Negros, also known as ‘Sugarlandia’ where Don Papa Rum is created. The super-premium plus segment of the rum category is in the early stages of premiumisation, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18% in Europe and 27% in the US between 2016-2021. Through the same period, Don Papa Rum consistently outperformed the market in Europe, delivering a 29% CAGR*. Stephen Carroll will remain involved with the brand, working alongside Diageo to build on Don Papa Rum’s growth potential. Available in over 30 countries worldwide, Don Papa Rum is a super-premium dark rum from the Philippines. Distilled and aged in American oak barrels on the island of Negros Occidental (known locally as ‘Sugarlandia’), the pure, original Negros sugar cane is the foundation for Don Papa Rum’s long, rich-textured finish and flavours of vanilla, honey, and candied fruits. The namesake of Don Papa Rum is inspired by the unsung hero and mystic, Papa Isio, who was one of the leading figures of the late 19th century Philippine revolution. Initially a foreman at a sugar plantation, his leadership and courage played a critical part in liberating the island of Negros from Spanish rule. Don Papa is inspired by his legend and captures his spirit and sense of magic in every bottle. We are delighted to announce that Diageo has reached an agreement to acquire Don Papa Rum, a super-premium, dark rum from the Philippines. That candy-coated fruit character endures, here folding in some mint, more toasted coconut, and a bit of strawberry into that orange-dominated body. Don Papa was founded by then Rémy Cointreau executive Stephen Carroll. [1] During a trip to Bacolod, Carroll heard stories of the area having the finest sugar cane in the world. [2] Until that time, rum from the country had been distilled in other areas of the Philippines. [2] Don Papa was first introduced in Bacolod in 2012, then Manila later that same year. [3] The brand has since become available in international markets such as the United Kingdom and Spain. [3] Don Papa became available in the United States in 2017. [4] There is controversy among rum enthusiasts regarding the use of additives such as glycerin, vanillin, added sugar, caramel color and other ingredients in the production of Don Papa. Some contend that because of the use of such ingredients and their impact on flavor profile and texture, Don Papa should be labeled "Imitation Rum" instead. [8] A class action suit has been filed in May 2022 in Illinois alleging that Don Papa should not be labeled "Rum", as the undisclosed use of additives could be misleading consumers.
