About this deal

The reason one needs to learn -how- to interpret is that, whether one likes it or not, every reader is at the same time an interpreter. Rather, he chose to speak his eternal truths within the particular circumstances and events of human history. We can debate over how to interpret and understand 1 Corinthians, but we can't simply say it wasn't Paul's writing (or a single verse was added by mistake). A systematic understanding of the intent of the Law will illuminate the necessity of the discussions between Jesus and the Pharisees revealed in the gospel accounts. Precisely because God chose to speak in the context of real human history, we may take courage that these same words will speak again and again in our own "real" history, as they have throughout the history of the church.

One of the advocates of this "gospel" begins his book by arguing for the "plain sense" of Scripture and claiming that he puts the Word of God first and foremost throughout his study. It is of more than passing interest that most of those in today's church who argue that, despite contrary evidence in 1 Corinthians 11:2–3, women should keep silent in church, on the basis of 1 Corinthians 14:34–35, at the same time deny the validity of speaking in tongues and prophecy, the very context in which the "silence" passage occurs.Useful for Bible teachers and pastors teaching young Christians to read the Bible thoughtfully and with the heart without making crucial mistakes in application. While interpretation of Revelation may continue to be elusive for the reader, Fee and Stuart remind the interpreter of the overarching approach to difficult pericope in Scripture: "If there are some ambiguities for us as to how all the details are to work out, there is no ambiguity as to the certainty that God will work it all out. It challenged me, answered many questions that I've had for more than two decades in a logical and meaningful way, and has helped to reshape my view of God the Father from a moralistic micromanager of mankind to that of a living Creator intent on redeeming the world and not just a narrowly limited few.

e. obligatory) way - unless it can be demonstrated on other grounds that the author intended it to function in this way. Very good explanation, discussion and inputting reader to have more knowledge of how to understand the bible. This statement articulates, perhaps even more than the discussion of the intricacies of narrative, the need for interpreters to properly evaluate historical genre.I'd long understood that most abuses of biblical quotation and interpretation centered around either proof-texting, or a simple lack of thorough reading (not reading the verse before and after the verse in question, never mind taking the time to read the full paragraph or chapter it's actually found in. But it is not quite easy to read, need to have more patience to understand different terms and things. The ability of Fee and Stuart to provide a terse yet substantive overview of the benefits and methods of interpreting parables is commendable. A few essential insights into the Bible can clear up a lot of misconceptions and help you grasp the meaning of Scripture and its application to your twenty-first century life.

Something I enjoyed in the reading was that there was not one single Bible translation that was held up as the ONLY valid one to read.

Not surprisingly, nearly every book that I have read since then about rightly handling Scripture quotes and/or cites Fee and Stuart at some point. Also, they do not really keep this rule consistently anyway, for they seem to feel free to violate it when working with the psalms, prophets, and Revelation. Though the use of many specialized terms might scare the layperson reader, both authors make sure to explain the meaning of said terms in a manner for all readers to comprehend. However, they are a "special kind of literature" and "require special care in reading and interpreting. It will surpass any other religous works when judged by the same standard with which we judge any other ancient work.
