About this deal

What family would want a daughter-in-law who can run around kicking football all day but can't make round chapatis?

As her sister's wedding day approaches and the resentment from his disapproving parents (Anupam Kher and Shaheen Khan) grows, can she develop her skills further and secure her dream of playing professionally in the US? More recently he has starred in several independent US films and appeared as Heahmund in epic TV show Vikings. On the North American Billboard video charts, the film entered the top ten of the Top DVD Sales and Top DVD Rentals charts, at number six on Top VHS Sales, and number seven on Top VHS Rentals.Set to a much-celebrated Punjabi soundtrack, with early 2000s hits and Spice Girls tracks, the music transports you into the culture clash that plays out on screen. When originally released in the United Kingdom, it topped the country's box office for the next three weekends, before being overtaken by About a Boy.

She's able to leave her sister's wedding with the approval of her dad, then scores a free-kick while imagining family members as defenders by bending the ball around them, just like Beckham. The film is all of these things, with sophisticated subplots, (almost) perfect casting, one of the greatest movie soundtracks of all time and a climactic final sequence that juxtaposes the beauty of a traditional Punjabi wedding with the joy of winning a football final.

Chadha, who played an active role in casting, chose Parminder Nagra and Keira Knightley, who would play the two lead roles in the film, while Archie Panjabi and Jonathan Rhys Meyers were in early talks to join the cast. Having previously worked with Road Movies, a German production company on several other projects, Nayar approached them and they came on board, followed by British Screen and The Film Council. The Harriers are behind 1–0 when Jess arrives, but they rally, and eventually Jess wins the game with a free kick. Alongside the splendour of Indian weddings and Indian feasts, the film’s cultural references are deep and genuine.

The British film was distributed by iDream Productions in India, [26] and went on to set the record in India for most tickets sold during a single weekend for a foreign movie. The Times of India noted the film's social context, saying, "[it] is really about the bending of rules, social paradigms and lives – all to finally curl that ball, bending it like Beckham, through the goalpost of ambition. When Bend It Like Beckham came out in 2002, women’s football wasn’t a professional sport in the UK or Australia. Dressed in their wedding saris on the pitch, the mirage is so comical and, for a second, so believable, that it is hard to imagine how Jess maintains her focus to take aim at the ball. The girls’ champion is their coach Joe (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), who falls in love with Jess’s potential and passion, and does everything a good sport coach should do: challenges, nurtures and rallies behind his players.Appearing as Jess’s firm but ultimately fair cricket-loving dad, Mohaan Singh Bhamra, Kher is a prolific actor who has appeared in over 500 films, predominantly in Hindi. Development for the film began after Chadha, Bindra, and Berges completed the screenplay by early 2001. Okay, so Beckham never actually made an appearance in the film, save for archive footage, but it was imbued with his spirit and skill, as shown by the focus on Jess’s goal to, indeed, bend it like Beckham (which she did). Planet Bollywood gave the film a mark of 9 out of 10: the "screenplay not only explores the development of Jess as a person, but also the changing values and culture of NRI teens: Jess's urge to break the social norm of the Indian home-maker, her sister's (Archie Punjabi) sexually active relationship, and the gay Indian [Tony, played by Ameet Chana]. I think the world was quite shocked and beaten up by that, and here comes this innocent film that is trying to make people understand what it feels like to be different.

He had been voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year the previous year for his efforts in helping the national side qualify for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, where England would ultimately be knocked out in the quarter-finals.Her early film roles included Truly, Madly, Deeply opposite Alan Rickman and Emma with Gwyneth Paltrow, as well as a huge list of TV roles after her debut in 1980. Juliet Stevenson and Frank Harper joined as Paula Paxton and Alan Paxton, mother and father of Jules. It also features "Baddest Ruffest" by Backyard Dog, the aria Nessun Dorma, from Puccini's Turandot and excerpts from dance band Basement Jaxx.
