Self-editing is the enemy of good spiritual mediumship. When we start out developing our mediumship, we have a tendency to question the information that we receive. If something sounds a bit strange or nonsensical to us, we don't want to vocalise it for fear of getting it wrong. College Tutor Gary Wright says: 'You've got a lot of information, and people start to filter it to look for what's right. And because they're nervous or uncomfortable, they start to filter out what they've got. You don't want to do that. You want to be very confident and put it across in a professional manner.' If the information is from Spirit, you can rest assured that it's accurate. You can trust it. If you want to become a professional psychic medium, it's important to trust. In Spiritism and Spiritualism the medium has the role of an intermediary between the world of the living and the world of spirit. Mediums claim that they can listen to and relay messages from spirits, or that they can allow a spirit to control their body and speak through it directly or by using automatic writing or drawing. A medium has to be a clear channel for other energy to connect with them and then they need to translate that energy into meaning that the person they are reading for understands, without projecting their own thoughts, beliefs and emotions onto the messages.

Between 8 November and 31 December 1920 Gustav Geley of the Institute Metapsychique International attended fourteen séances with the medium Franek Kluski in Paris. A bowl of hot paraffin was placed in the room and according to Kluski spirits dipped their limbs into the paraffin and then into a bath of water to materialize. Three other series of séances were held in Warsaw in Kluski's own apartment, these took place over a period of three years. Kluski was not searched in any of the séances. Several different variants of mediumship have been described; arguably the best-known forms involve a spirit purportedly taking control of a medium's voice and using it to relay a message, or where the medium simply "hears" the message and passes it on.
