About this deal

If you think about the climate we have in the west of Scotland, and how well Acers grow here, that gives you a clue to the conditions they like best.

If Acers could choose their soil, they’d pick a slightly sandy, acidic type but they’ll grow well anywhere as long as it's moist and well drained.Once planted, add a handful of feed and work into the top soil Container plants: (Plant at any time of year in suitable soil conditions). Contains a rich mix of nitrogen, phosphate and potash along with magnesium and trace elements to encourage healthy growth and vibrant foliage.

In pots: Acer feed can be mixed with compost when repotting or worked into the surface of existing pots as an annual top-dressing. These destructive little bugs can occasionally affect Acers in pots - their grubs eat the roots and the adults eat the leaves. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. You can then spray the affected areas with a solution of water and oil or soap ( recipes here) which will prevent the insects clinging on and suffocate any that do. With 40 years experience in the horticultural industry, where better to obtain gardening advice than from Cowell's, the family garden centre. In a pot I'd avoid any organic fertiliser as it would perform better in the ground where you have the microorganisms to break them down properly. Perfect for both new and established plants, blooming Fast Acer Feed is an organic granular feed combining the nutrients essential for the health growth of Japanese Maples. Just follow our growers’ acer tree care tips and they’ll thrive in any spot, providing you with dazzling colour for many years. You can prevent leaf scorch by planting (or positioning your pot) in a sheltered spot out of direct sunlight where the tree will get some dappled shade. Vitax Acer Feed contains the three major plant foods - nitrogen, phosphate and potash, together with natural magnesium and trace elements to encourage healthy leaf growth and vibrant colours.

When you need to repot your tree into a larger pot (roughly every three to four years) do it in early spring before the new growth begins to emerge, and use new compost. In the garden: Apply Acer Feed as a spring top-dressing at a rate of 120g/m2 beneath the spread of the branches. It’s also a good idea to apply a coating of mulch around your trees - this keeps the weeds down, helps the ground retain moisture and adds nutrients. When planting, put some broken crockery or slate chips in the bottom of the pot to improve drainage and use a general purpose compost. Rake, hoe or fork into the top surface of the soil, and in dry weather, water well for maximum benefit. An inorganic granular fertiliser like Miracle Gro or Growmore works better in pots as they're heat and moisture activated so they're more effective in the confines of a pot.
