About this deal

The Patek Philippe Calatrava is like a holy grail for many watch collectors and fans. Many view it as one of the archetypal dress watches that has influenced the style of this classic watch category. The first Calatrava, the ref. 96, was released in 1932 and took its name from the Patek Philippe company logo. At the time, the minimalist, streamlined design was considered modern and avant garde. The look of the Calatrava was strongly inspired by the Bauhaus movement. English watch designer David Penney is responsible for the Calatrava’s minimalist design. Gropius wanted to bring fine art, architecture, graphic design, and interior design together into one movement. The Native for example comes in a series of case sizes. From a tiny 28mm to a comfortable 40mm. There are four choices of case, with silver or gunmetal being my favourites. During the times of modernism, Bauhaus mirrored society. The world at the time was transforming, as the rise of industry and “the machine” reshaped every aspect of one’s being. The artists who called themselves part of the movement reflected society’s changes in their creations, including how they looked, worked, and even how they created these works of art. Whitford, Frank, ed. (1992). The Bauhaus: Masters & Students by Themselves. London: Conran Octopus. p.32. ISBN 978-1-85029-415-3. He invented the name 'Bauhaus' not only because it specifically referred to Bauen ('building', 'construction')—but also because of its similarity to the word Bauhütte, the medieval guild of builders and stonemasons out of which Freemasonry sprang. The Bauhaus was to be a kind of modern Bauhütte, therefore, in which craftsmen would work on common projects together, the greatest of which would be buildings in which the arts and crafts would be combined. The term Bauhaus was inspired by medieval builder’s huts, which served as gathering places for groups of craftsmen to build cathedrals. However, the Bauhaus had nothing to do with sacred architecture – functionality was at the forefront of the movement. Gropius put it as follows, “Beauty can only arise from the complete harmony of technical function and proportional form.” The well-known motto form follows function accurately depicts a philosophy of the school. Artists from this period were thinking economically and were interested in using resources wisely. They were questioning, retaliating against, and accommodating mass production all at the same time.If you’re a graphic designer, you might want to bring the Bauhaus look to one of your designs or apply some of the Bauhaus principles of design to your work. By playing with geometry, color theory, minimalism, and functionality, you might discover a whole new approach to your design work and creative process.

Starting off our list is a German timepiece designed by one of Bauhaus’s very own proteges, Max Bill. The Junghans Max Bill Handaufzug is a prime example of a form meeting function. With its slender indices, thin pencil hands, luminescent nodes, and Junghans signature, this watch boasts a clean look with meaningful design features. This one's just for fun! Following World War I, the main aim of Bauhaus artists was to build inexpensive and practical buildings to make mobility and work easier for people. At that time, there was no talk of sustainability and energy efficiency. "These are issues that are more important today," said Singer. "Researchers will present their results to society. We have also applied for patents which will then be applied." Finding Aid for archive of Bauhaus typography collection, 1919–1937". J. Paul Getty Trust. hdl: 10020/cifa850513 . Not a lot of watchmakers can create Bauhaus watches as skillfully as Nomos does. And with a simple glance at the Metro 38, you would probably agree. Its galvanised white silver-plated dial acts like an art canvas that highlights the different details of the watch face. The blue spot-like hour markers on the outer rim of the dial and the subdial’s vibrant red second hand provide some splashes of colour and create a cohesive look that is easy on the eyes. A watch is a timekeeper first, but it also acts as a fashion accessory capable of completing anyone’s look. Need to look sophisticated for an important event? Pair your suit with a sleek dress watch, and people will take you more seriously. Preparing for a camping trip and need something to make you look and feel like a pro? Form follows function" was an essential motto in the movement. This meant that the functionality of any design was first and foremost. The form of an object should support its purpose or function, essentially. There is no denying that Bauhaus watches are fascinating works. By stripping away all unnecessary features and giving the spotlight to a watch’s primary functions, the Bauhaus style proves that functionality can look appealing and quite sophisticated. The guys at Nordgreen have offered my readers a 15% discount. It doesn't expire either. Explore their mens watches and use code 'CHRON'. Nomos was founded in Glashutte, Saxony two months after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
