About this deal

Her mild West Country accent works for the scenes with her Mum, who lives in Plymouth, and she uses other accents effectively for other characters. I’m a PR at heart so I know that I’m never going to just drop a show and then not do audience development. The Fringe Firsts have been recognising outstanding new writing premiered at the festival since 1973 - here are our first winners of 2022. I’ve always been careful about creating a little nest egg for myself just in case, I earn a living but it’s not much. My hope is it begins a conversation and opens up a much greater awareness into the often-complex mental health condition of hoarding, often with other comorbidities, just to complicate the situation.

One is a podcast where I speak to different people who identify with hoarding behaviours and the other one it’s about encouraging people to share the stories of the clothes that they have, when they get rid of them, when they donate them to charity, or they sell them. The single mother who was delighted to pick up an Isa Arfen dress she’d seen in a fashion magazine but never been able to afford. Plesance Theatre Trust and Theatre Royal Plymouth are delighted to bring Breathless by Laura Horton, Plymouth Laureate of Words, to Theatre Royal Plymouth and Edinburgh Festival Fringe. MacMahon is a versatile solo performer and engaging storyteller, voicing many characters from Sophie’s girlfriend Jo, her Dad, shady ex-boyfriend and snotty magazine colleagues with swift physical pen portraits for them all. The environmental cost of creating clothes is clearly high as huge amounts of resources are needed to make clothes. There’s all the time in the world to see my place,” Sophie says, except there isn’t, because Jo is weary of being kept at a distance. I urge any readers of this newsletter visiting this amazing Scottish city to see ‘Breathless’ and put the word out there. Laura Horton’s full-length plays include: Labyrinth Diet, The Space, London 2021, ONCOMM winner; Triptych, Theatre Royal Plymouth, 2021. Played by Madeleine MacMahon, who gives her a nervous likability, Sophie would seem to have arrived at a joyous time in life. A woman in her late thirties reckons with a lifetime of clothes hoarding in the London transfer of Laura Horton’s award-winning Edinburgh Fringe hit, starring Madeleine Macmahon and directed by Stephanie Kempson. The female monologue is a well-established contemporary theatre form, but often the content is predictable and sometimes clichéd. I’ve only really just transitioned out of still taking on PR clients in the last year, and I still have one, just in case. Equity has announced that chorus members at the English National Opera will not strike on 1 February. I could never find anything, much of it didn’t fit as I’d bought things in the hope I’d slim into them eventually.

And so minimalist Jo enters her life, a perfect match in (almost) every way but fatally suspicious of Sophie’s Herculean efforts to stop her entering the flat as the two worlds collide with percussive results. Breathless has been playing at Soho Theatre in London and will go trans-Atlantic and be performed in New York City in the coming months. With a light touch Horton cleverly shows the deep negative impacts on her protagonist’s job, relationships and social life.Opening up to new experiences in her late-thirties, Sophie is exploring long repressed sides of herself.

Wheeling about to create different spaces, the rails are a much cleverer way of expressing the seeming invisibility of this problem, as well as the fantasies Sophie ladens her wardrobe with. We do this by creating and presenting a breadth of shows on a range of scales, with our extensive creative engagement programmes, by embracing the vitality of new talent and supporting emerging and established artists, and by collaborating with a range of partners to provide dynamic cultural leadership for the city of Plymouth. It’s also what inspired my Hidden by Things campaign where we invite people to donate clothing with stories attached.I was going to try and get sponsorship, you know businesses involved, we were in the middle of planning that, and doing all the health and safety- it was a nightmare trying to source a treadmill. The show's exploration of hoarding is a really valuable one, presented with nuance and tenderness, raising awareness without feeling forced or preachy. Living with a mental health issue is not something that is easily and neatly resolved, it’s a constant process of work and self-acceptance.
