Though a variation to the original Alice in Wonderland plot you will certainly agree that this is a place like no place on earth. The film is set 19 years after Alice's first trip to Underland, and Burton makes use of this fact very cleverly throughout the film. I have always had a fascination with this Disney film, being a true blue Disney fan I consider it one of the great ones. Much has been made of the caterpillar with the hookah, not without some justification, one feels, and likewise the Cheshire Cat - all very surreal and distant. But the song "I Give Myself Very Good Advice" and the unsatisfying adaptation of "The Walrus and Carpenter" bring the story to a halt.Partly thanks (I suspect) to the grounding the book gave the film, the plot unfolded smoothly throughout, with no sense of artificiality - disbelief was certainly suspended. Alice in Wonderland has to be one of the better known Disney classics, particularly thanks to the updated spin-off starring Johnny Depp, but I think it's criminally underated!
