And in spite of all of the talk about relationships unravelling and self-discovery, it’s unabashedly sexy too. I think she might be a genius' Sophie Heawood, author of The Hungover Games'I've really never read about sex and been so sharply reminded about how much it is tied up with the fundamentals of being a woman'Minnie DriverFrom the author of Your Voice in My Head and Royals comes a beautiful, breath-taking, unputdownable memoir about love and heartbreak, sex and celibacy, growing up and starting again. As well as being elegantly written, Busy Being Free is eminently readable – a treasure trove of profound insights into love, lust and female desire. I wouldn't say this book would be relatable for many readers as Emma is in a very fortunate position and definitely has an unconventional relationship with her ex-husband.

When you swap a Hollywood marriage and a LA mansion with waterside views, for a little attic flat shared only with your daughter, beneath the star-filled sky of deepest North London? Her insistence on comparing details in her present life with musings on her previous sexual encounters often jars. Beautiful' Nigella Lawson'I adored it' Dolly Alderton'Wonderful' Lisa Taddeo'Intoxicating' Abi MorganWhat happens when your story doesn't end the way you thought it would? There’s dense, lovely prose in here, and it’s the type of memoir that doesn’t shy from embarrassing or unflattering details. From the author of 'Your Voice in My Head' and 'Royals' comes a beautiful, breath-taking, unputdownable memoir about love and heartbreak, sex and celibacy, growing up and starting again. To describe a memoir as solipsistic may seem redundant, but Busy Being Free is solipsistic in the best way: that is to say, Forrest is hyper-aware that she is telling her own story. I did like her descriptions of the women in her life, and that some bits were very honest and emotional, with real pockets of insight (just annoying that they were always shortly followed by something shallow or vapid). Regardless of content a page turner deserves 5 stars because it was compelling enough to keep turning to find out what was next. For someone whose career has started in journalism, I didn’t ask anybody anywhere any of the most basic questions. gorgeous lush writing mixed with enough of life’s ugliness to get you thinking ‘hey wait a minute, I never thought of it like that before ….

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. On acquiring the book, publishing director for Orion Lettice Franklin described it as “a memoir about what it is to find oneself, in the middle of your life, at a bump in the road; about the romance to be found in leaving a marriage and starting out alone; about sex and celibacy. Born in London, Emma Forrest began her writing career as a teenage columnist on the Sunday Times , going on to have columns in The Guardian , the Independent and Elle .Reading Busy Being Free isn't like reading at all, in the sense that you will never look at how many pages you have left, or wonder whether this was the page you got stuck on last night before sleep. This is really a divorce memoir and people really need to understand the burden and freedom in divorce.

I did enjoy reading Emma Forrest's second memoir but found it a bit disjointed, and if you aren't familiar with the film and music business, it sometimes feels difficult to understand all the allusions. This book is billed as a story of female emancipation, albeit a very straight, white, middle-class one.e. talking about her husband’s obsession with a Kanye West song or her toyboy being ridiculously cool) just annoyed me. Alluring, shocking, welcome and wonderful' Lisa Taddeo, author of Three Women From the author of Your Voice in My Head and Royals comes a beautiful, breath-taking, unputdownable memoir about love and heartbreak, sex and celibacy, growing up and starting again. Her memoir Your Voice In My Head is beloved by Nick Hornby, Dolly Alderton, Bryony Gordon, Emma Gannon, Florence Welch and Elizbeth Gilbert. I took comfort in many of the things she revealed she processed post divorce and her exploration of shame and disappointment.
