About this deal

Also his respect for her was the bare minimum but him being one of the first to give that to her was freeing. She treats everyone, from her lover, to her guards, to all the citizens she's responsible for, like absolute trash. And while it's nice to see her fight back, she's still under his thumb and frequently gets herself and others seriously hurt by her outbursts.

I don’t even know how I waited these three days to finish the book but I just knew shit was about to go down in the last 20%.

We got used to her moping about her situation (without doing anything to change it) in the last two books. Auren humiliates Midas and doesn’t obey him so he gets angry and makes Ravinger’s Commander carry Auren to the harp to play all night. Auren's character arc is once again very well-written: although she now feels betrayed by Midas, she has to fight old reactions in his presence.

There's more scheming and more secrets resurfacing and Auren will either have to follow her heart or remain in her gilded cage. Jedes Wort, jede Seite begleitete ein extremer Suchtmodus, was auch mit dem flüssigen Schreibstil zusammenhängt. Not that I expect the author to suddenly make Slade the bad guy, but come on girl - did you learn nothing?Seriously, the character and relationship development over the three books is exquisite, and something I rarely see in a series. I fell in love with his kindness and fiercely protective side, and the sexual tension mixed with the angst between Auren and him was delightful.

I try not to judge authors that use those tropes - they're tropes for a reason - but this series was one that strayed from many of the normal formulas in the first two. Auren is still trying to deal with the emotional aftermath of Rip's lies and "betrayal" (although in my humble opinion, it's not really a betrayal. Comparatively, you have characters like Rissa, who has more than likely led an even worse life, and is headstrong and desperate to escape her life. The last two only appear I think maybe twice each but we get a couple more from Malina and things are not going well for the little ice queen. But did anyone think that she would actually leave Slade and hide in some other kingdom by herself for the rest of the series?I couldn't wait to read the sequel to the second book and this book was everything I could have hoped for.
