Gatward touches on exploring their vulnerabilities and strengths, forging opening connections that resonate with readers on a basic level. Harry Grimm, scar-faced former police detective from Bristol, is settling in (at least tentatively) in his “temporary” secondment in Wensleydale, Yorkshire. The narrator’s gravelly voice with a Bristol accent for Harry Grimm contrasted beautifully with the array of Yorkshire accents and the single Scottish accent of the other colorful characters. He grew up in the Cotswolds and Yorkshire in England (including the town for the setting of Grimm Up North), and he’s also lived in Lincolnshire and the Lake District. The Hodgson’s house was a large semi-detached on the road leading out of Hawes on the right, a few hundred metres past the playpark.

For the most part I liked the humor that ran throughout, though at times it felt like it was trying a bit too hard to make me laugh, especially at the start.

Despite the somewhat predictable outcome the characters were interesting and there was a liberal dose of humour scattered throughout.

The victim was a bad-tempered, feared, hated, and long-time bullying farmer named John “Beef” Capstick who had a troubled childhood and estranged with his father. It’s all part of a large, organized conspiracy run by greedy and cruel people, something no one had looked for out here in the country. Harry hunts through the records and talks to old schoolmates of the victims, gradually piecing together the story of a horrible cruelty long forgotten by most. Gatward’s Harry Grimm books are not great literature, but they’re entertaining “English rural” police stories.
