About this deal

The first few pages establish the character — she hates her body, feeling like she’s “wearing a leotard of flesh”, but keeps eating, because that’s a moment when she’s not thinking about her size and how other women denigrate her for it. Original Review: Considering how much I enjoyed this work, I couldn't help but feel like it was a tad bit simplistic - especially when it came to the dialog. Anno doesn’t shy away from nudity at all, and I think it really helps drive home the themes of the manga. While Noko started out not seeming to mind the fact that she’s fat, the bullying she encounters at work, added to the fact that her boyfriend is cheating on her, makes her think that her life would be better – and happier – if she were thin.

She really captures that dead, weak, look that anorexic people often have, where they might be smiling but look like they’re about to pass out any moment.Anno is in many ways holding up a mirror to us and showing us a rather grotesque but all too realistic depiction of how people really act. Además todos son extremadamente crueles con ella, en algunos puntos me costaba hasta leerlo porque me incomodaba mucho. The art style of this manga feels very quick and loose, similar to Erica Sakurazawa if you've ever picked up her work. Also, as Noko continues to starve herself, you see how she actually starts to embrace her feelings of hunger as a method of control. Throw in a conspiracy theorist co-worker, a mysterious man who is a ‘chubby chaser’, a mysterious weight loss clinic and office politics and you have the story.

One of the textbook examples of those suffering from anorexia nervosa is often a sense of achievement from denying oneself food, and this is a common theme witnessed throughout the book.

When the Israelites were cursed at the foot of Sinai for building a golden calf, it wasn’t for following another god; instead, they had minimized Yahweh by creating a Yahweh-idol that magnified only his strength (what a calf was known for in that culture). That also explains the particularly noticeable comparisons to Okazaki’s works as the timing was much closer to when Anno worked as her assistant. Anno is also excellent at using the characters' body language to speak volumes about their moods and outlooks, just through things like their eyes or their stance. This is where I think this manga excels, along with the little moments that show what life is like for Noko as a fat woman – such as when Mayumi berates her for wearing a worn-out, unfashionable bra, not realising how difficult it is for a woman of Noko’s size to find one that fits at all (let alone a cute one!

They’ve been together for several years, but his motives for being with her are as abusive as her co-workers, and she eventually finds out he’s cheating on her. The main message of this manga is that contentedness comes from within, and unless you get to the root of the problem, you will always be dissatisfied with life. It’s probable that no Philistine actually thought Dagon looked like a hybrid between a fish and a dude, but people need something to hold on to, a little prop to turn mere metaphor into something vaguely solid and believable. We shouldn’t expect that Moyoco Anno will change the world with this small graphic novel, but we might as well hope.

Y nunca suelo opinar sobre los dibujos o el estilo básicamente porque no entiendo y no se distinguir más allá de "me gusta o no me gusta cómo está dibujado". While those are valid views, I want to emphasize that Noko's extreme experiences do exist in reality and must not be brushed away as unrealistic and unrelatable just because every woman does not go through them. While not protecting Noko from the harm she is doing herself, or encourage or condoning the girls character, Anno lets her live her life. But in October apparently someone announced that her manga Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen will be the first Japanese manga to be adapted into a Broadway musical.
