About this deal

My wife wanted a new machine to replace a vintage hand-operated model she has, and this electric machine has been a revelation. The machine only does straight and zigzag stitches of various styles, buttonholes and embroidered effects for topstitching. The machine is not noisy in operation, and my wife finds that she is becoming much more confident even though she has so far only done a couple of projects. Furthermore the good range of sewing features make it an affordable choice for more experienced sewing enthusiasts that don’t want to spend too much.

However you can always practice on it with scraps of cloth before sewing a garment to get used to it.

I really like the brightly lit screen showing me clearly what stitch number I’m using and even advises what presser foot to use. I had a New Home sewing machine back in the early 80’s when I was a teenager, my lovely Aunt got me one when I started a dressmaking course at college.

In addition to all this, you have the opportunity to sew without the use of a foot pedal with the machine's start/stop function.

Replacement original packaging may be able to be supplied (a cost will apply) if you have discarded the box or polystyrene. A back-lit LED control panel is large and easy to read, while other great features include a 1-step buttonhole maker, a drop-in bobbin and a slide speed control that removes the need for a foot control pedal. You might think you won't have enough control without the pedal but in reality the speed can be adjusted while you sew with a sliding button and the lowest speed is a hundred times more precise and steady than work with the foot pedal ever was. The instruction pamphlet is reasonably clear, but care is required to begin with while reading it (some instructions relate to models with auto threading and so on and we found it easy to initially get side tracked). The sequel to FS40, and one of the new ones in the series of innovative quality sewing machines from Brother.

Stitch Options: The Singer 9960 offers a higher number of built-in stitches compared to the Brother FS40, with 600+ stitches, including decorative and alphanumeric options. The FS40 comes with an impressive 40 stitches, start/stop buttons (good for beginners), 15 needle positions, a very easy to use LCD screen and there is even the option of an extension table. I've literally just opened the box today and after reading the top notch user manual did my first 1-step buttonhole which was the main reason for the upgrade (the Singer was butchering my creations). New: A brand-new, unused, unopened and undamaged item in original retail packaging (where packaging .

Furthermore if you are in to doing a lot of free-motion sewing and embroidery the feed dogs can be dropped. This is a good machine, and despite having only a 40w motor it has coped with the materials she has so far used - even a heavy pair of denim jeans giving no trouble at all. Compared to some sewing machines the FS40 is quite limited with regards to the accessories you get with it.
