About this deal

The story usually starts with what seems like a normal relationship, but it quickly becomes a tangled web of back-stabbing (literally and figuratively) and lies. Stephanie has new-born twin daughters and is struggling to cope with them despite her happy marriage to Patrick. As her reality slowly distorts, she has to gather the pieces of her life to find the truth to protect her family. We got to see chapters from Stephanie and Patrick, Patrick's business partner Niall, as well as several other characters.

The plot is moved along by Erica, a woman who Patrick had an affair with at the time of his first wife’s death, that may or may not know more details about this death and Patrick whose arrival in town brings all of this to light.Stephanie and Patrick have a good life together, happily married, with beautiful twin daughters and because this is a Lapena novel you know that things are about to go terribly for them.

The couple initially believes this is merely a blatant attempt at extortion, but the accusations go further than they ever imagined. No matter-lots of people have families without getting married these days, although she'd mentioned a husband. She hurries into the nursery, whispering shhh, shhhh… She picks each baby up, one at a time, soothing them, kissing their soft cheeks. And then, the colic… the babies didn’t sleep well from the outset, and then around the age of six weeks, it got worse. They knew so much past human intellect that the human vocabulary could not even describe what they were feeling.

Everything is written in the third person and the attention shifts frequently between a number of characters, serenely describing events as they happen in a way that slowly builds towards a sudden revelation.Erica blackmails them because she already did her homework and she knows about inheritance money of Stephanie and she wants her cut for her silence not to talk to the police for reopening the murder case.

Despite these flaws, the fast pace will keep those fond of mischief and murder in suburbia turning the pages. Then all at once she knows what to do-she wrenches open a bottom cupboard and grabs a metal lid, then slides it onto the frying pan. In the end, readers are torn back and forth between whether Patrick might be guilty or innocent, and I loved the way the author kept this part of the mystery going until the very end. When a woman shows up in Stephanie's life claiming her husband Patrick murdered his first wife, her life is thrown into turmoil.

There's Stephanie, the innocent, recently married with colicky twins, and then there's Patrick, Stephanie's husband. As we watch her perfect life falling apart, we’re willing her on to discover the truth, for her sake as much our own. Well, this novel has that vibe of a crazy woman from a man’s past who wreaked havoc on that man’s marriage.
