The publication in EMLO of the correspondences of the wives of six seventeenth-century stadtholders offers an unprecedented opportunity to analyse female power and influence in the political circles of the Dutch Republic at the Orange and Stuart courts in The Hague and their counterpart at the Frisian court in Leeuwarden. On the shoulders of widows and widowers fall the responsibilities that they previously shared with their partners. Though this was a small proportion, it made me think that exhibitions still contextualise female artists in relation to the men they knew, and wonder whether this narrative can ever change. I like taking in nature and experiencing nature, whilst having great conversations with local residents.Couples kiss goodbye at Croydon railway station in 1939 - a photograph on display at the Wives and Sweethearts exhibition. The exhibition reveals the varied and important place occupied by women, both real and imagined, in his world. Similarly, in Diego Rivera’s wall text at Tate Modern, Frida Kahlo is not named – a significant absence as there are no works by Kahlo in UK public collections. They illustrate particularly well the long career of this royal servant and they were sent respectively, forty-six years apart, to Amalia von Solms-Braunfels and to Mary Stuart, the future Queen of England, Scotland, and Ireland. The exhibition will be the first to challenge the popular assumption that Rubens painted only one type of woman, providing instead a more nuanced view of the artist who painted more portraits of his wives and children than almost any other, even Rembrandt.

Martin’s Press), this special exhibition features documents, photos, oral histories and memorabilia from the Dole Archives, personal collections of POW/MIA families, and other institutions. I’m delighted to be joining Legacy WM board of trustees both to support the development of a brilliant grass roots organisation in our city, and to connect The Rep with more local communities and learn how we can better serve them through our work as a major city institution.
