About this deal

Drives are connected to a massive heat spreader which doubles up as the back of the case and it’s pretty good at removing the heat. I've taken it out and flipped it around, so it's extracting hot air from the top of the case instead of just redistributing it. Unaware of that (as my Argon Eon was constantly connected to the network) I run into some troubles caused by my NAS’ time being constantly reset to 2020!

The case includes a vast array of bonus features, the power button doubles as an OLED that can be used to display temperatures, the NAS's IP address, and many others. He is a creative technologist and for seven years has created projects to educate and inspire minds both young and old.

To give you a reference a naked Raspberry Pi 4 board runs at about 52℃ idle and goes all the way to 82℃ where it throttles the speed of the CPU.

I know that hardcore users will shout at me for using Raspberry Pi as a NAS but if I’m honest over nearly 5 years of storage, not a single bite was lost.As Raspberry Pi 4 has removed the biggest limitation of the board for NAS use, Argon Eon offers access at 1Gbps via Ethernet. The black, opaque acrylic panels are mounted thanks to embedded magnets and are probably the weakest link of this design. I haven’t tested it, but something tells me you could have a USB boot from that port and drop the need for the microSD card entirely. Remotely connecting via SSH, we installed the Argon EON helper script which provides an on / off switch, fan control, support for an IR receiver (not tested) and a real time clock. Seems to be quite a bit faster but some things changed like the USB ports being switched, which makes it impossible to use it with the EON because it would mean using the HDDs with a USB2.

For the software we followed Argon’s guidance and downloaded the latest Raspberry Pi OS, but we did deviate a little.

The aluminium body naturally conducts and dissipates heat which is backed up by a built-in controllable 60mm fan to cool both the Raspberry Pi and hard disks even at heavy loads. No boring black box here – instead we appear to have a pyramidical version of the monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey. A real-time clock allows for accurate time to be kept in the event of a power outage and automating tasks such as restarting or getting data through APIs.
