At face value, an entertaining and pleasant read, and at a deeper level, extremely thought-provoking. The book itself is linear through time, but the octopuses in the book don’t feel like they are necessarily operating in a time-linear fashion. However, the anecdotes (especially lengthy personal testimony about the authors observations while diving) seem to pad out the sparse scientific evidence. You may not learn a lot about the octopus’s natural history from reading this delightful book, but the kid in your life will love singing along to the accompanying CD.
