About this deal

This is the sort of energy Hahn and Mitch bring to the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible, the latter being the 'principal annotator'. Unfortunately, only the New Testament can be purchased as a single, bound volume – the Old Testament books remain a 7-volume set. Scott Hahn (extremely well-known for his Scriptural studies and his evangelical conversion to Catholicism) and Curtis Mitch fill the notes with references to This is an important consideration, because every edition of the NABRE is required have the same footnotes. He is a supporter of Pope Benedict XVI's theological approach to biblical interpretation and this study NT reflects this unique background.

Both feature the top-notch RSV translation and their notes are generally faithful to Church tradition. For example, 'behold' and 'baby' were used for 'lo' and 'babe' in the NT, and 'mercy' and 'donkey' used throughout the OT for 'steadfast love' and 'ass'. Scott graduated from Grove City College in 1979 with his BA in Theology, Philosophy and Economics (magna cum laude). It paints the picture one needs to exegete the scripture and bring it to life in its setting and context.Although the Guide is (somewhat annoyingly) set apart from the books it refers to, it is helpfully cross-referenced to the biblical text (and vice-versa). Because the Church is one, holy, catholic, and apostolic, Bibles should not simply reflect the thoughts of a single person or even that of particular sects. The explanations about passages and their references to both old and New Testament connections is outstanding. Well, I have noticed that when a Bible is printed in black and white, they contain either no maps or black and white maps. So whether it is a simple pew Bible, a youth Bible, or a full-sized family Bible, readers get the same notes.

Understand Sacred Scripture with this narrative approach to salvation history using The Great Adventure’s color-coded Bible Timeline® Learning System! The notes and essays (which do not all reflect the Catechism, nor traditional Catholic teaching) are non-academic, but certainly not anti-intellectual or overly “spiritual.

This book, although it is just the New Testament, is larger and heavier than an average complete bible. None of these entries will be entirely satisfactory for an evangelical or other protestant who converts. The work also contains an expanded glossary, a 95-page concordance, Sunday and weekday Lectionary schedule, and new Oxford maps. There are study Bibles for the concordance of Holy Scripture, the Navarre Bible, New Testament, the Gospels and even study Bibles for couples and teens. Commentaries include the best insights of ancient, medieval and modern scholarship, and follow the Church’s guidelines for biblical interpretation. The New American Bible was the first Catholic translation made directly from the original biblical languages (rather than from the Latin Vulgate).

Therefore, before, when I did not have a copy of the Roman Missal, Study Edition (to be reviewed later), I would often turn to the Lectionary Table. This modest edition augments the NAB annotations with ~100 pages of articles, additional introductions for each book, and some background-style content within the main body, including: photographs, charts, maps, fan tabs, etc. Additional materials include several in-text essays, a glossary, biblical weights and measures, lectionary, index, concordance, and maps. In addition to the notes, topical essays and word studies include interpretations from the Fathers of the Church, the Catholic Magisterium, and faithful Catholic scholars.
