About this deal

The present-day story tells the tale of a London cabbie, Dave Rudman, a somewhat pathetic character who it seems you are to both pity and feel disgusted by, as he meets a woman, has a son, gets divorced, and has a total mental breakdown. As an example, burgerkine is a word used to describe cattle and cloakyfing is used to indicate a Muslim burka. But the funny thing is, whilst the religion that Self depicts isn’t exactly the most pleasant of religions, it doesn’t really feel as though he’s trying to make a statement – it’s more like he’s just taken things to their logicial conclusion and presented them to you in an unbiased way.

As someone with a terrible mind for storing plot detail, this book places no onus upon the reader to keep on top of the terminology since much of it is a mere bonus and indulgence. Syz loses his friends and meets strange characters who send him on a quest to uncover the real truth behind Dave. W]hether or not Self's Hammier chapters will endure, there is no doubt that those written in the voice of Dave offer just about the funniest and most depressing vision we could have of where we are here in 'Ing' right now. No ratings as it's been 5 years I'm reading it (no shit), keep stoping and keep going back to it, because this book hurts my brain so much that I can't manage to stick to it for too long. This is why her books are so recommended and stretch across the market from fans of literary fiction to those who love commercial genres.

Although Dave is a sympathetic character and we root for him, it begins to be clear throughout the novel that he was also abusive towards his wife and son. The present-day story is full of brutally honest descriptions of unsympathetic characters, foolish decisions and bad luck.Speaking of distractions, in the middle of writing this unreview, some kid knocked on the door looking for his dog. While the contemporary passages conform to reader expectations of style and syntax, albeit of a literary fiction type, Self renders the future speech of Ing in a ferociously phonetic form of cockney speech patterns and accents. Arriving at Leeds Polytechnic to study Fine Art, the very first person he spoke to was a fellow student named Marc Almond; the musical stars were aligned.

The geography of the island, illustrated in a map at the start of the book, bears close resemblance to the modern areas of Hampstead which inspired it. The lab director tells him that they plan to step up their efforts to make Dave become self-aware, which depends upon Dave having a single personality, not many.If this isn't going to be confusing enough, both stories are written with a phonetic approach to dialogue. Additionally, aspects of Dave's life are ritualised into legal requirements: such as "changeover", the act of custodial exchange of children, and parents being forced to live apart even though they would be happy living together. There's a glossary at the back of the book to help you become accustomed to the language and it does make reading the first chapter a little slow. The novel’s protagonist is a computer programmer named Syz who works at the lab, a complex city structure centred around a computer.

The book is maybe a little longer than it needs to be, and maybe a little bit more confusing than it needs to be.In this examination of fatherhood and other themes, Self pursues twin timelines separated by a couple of millennia of history and apocalyptic climate change trauma, but connected by the eponymous Book of Dave. Two stories based on one man, this book is long and depressing and then sort of softly gut-punches you at the end. The book resembles, in part, Riddley Walker, a 1981 novel by Russell Hoban [2] written in a similar phonetic manner and also set in England centuries after a major disaster.
