About this deal

When d'Artagnan and his father are attacked on the way to Paris resulting in the father's death, the young swordsman seeks revenge on the murderer.

By episode four, Jason concedes that his son's more brutal view is the right one and he somehow falls in line. Other regular characters included Moll the innkeeper (Shirley Cameron), Kate Bell (Helen Morse), a former inmate of the notorious Female Factory at Parramatta, and former comic Willie Fennell as a shepherd who the Firbeck family befriends. He displayed a ruthless and decidedly cruel streak and was motivated by just two things – his desire to succeed as a rancher by any means and his quasi-incestuous love for his sister Jassy.Filmed entirely on location, it is a tale of pioneering and achievement against bitter odds, in which a family struggles to carve out an existence in a land more dangerous and more brutal than the West at its wildest. Interesting series which unusually features early colonial Australia, something I've not really seen visualized before.

The picture is a bit grainy but I remember it being like that when it was first broadcast on telly many moons ago. Tobias, with his rugged good looks was already on his way to making a career of period-piece dramas having previously starred in Arthur of the Britons, he would follow this series with a guest appearance in Dick Turpin and a starring role in Smuggler. The series shows the struggle for survival in the early days of Australia in all it's brutal, corrupt, lawless and miserable glory,no punches are pulled, and it makes the wild west look like Trumpton! Nostalgia Central covers the period 1950 to 1999 and contains some words and references which reflect the attitudes of those times and which may be considered culturally sensitive, offensive or inappropriate today. Luke's father Jason (James Condon) is representative of a more naïve generation who somehow believe that all the righteousness of the empire will follow them into the wild, and he is constantly disappointed that the old guard often turn out to be the most corrupt, Fortunately for him, and the family, Luke is under no such delusion.Tobias is excellent as the determined, violent and very flawed 'hero'(you'll see why) who will stop at nothing to protect his family's land, but all the cast are good and the stories are well written and filmed, you will get frustrated at Luke's father, who just does not get it! Their journey was not meant to be a speculative one, as the father, former naval lieutenant Jason Firbeck (James Condon), set out to claim land bequeathed to them by an old friend. Used to like this programme years ago and bought it to see if it was as good as I remembered, I was not disappointed but thought it was a longer series than it actually is. Starring Oliver Tobias, James Condon, Helen Morse and Elizabeth Crosby, and produced by Tony Essex ( Follyfoot ), Luke's Kingdom is an epic adventure series set in Australia during the early nineteenth century. It was co-produced with Trident Television, the then owners of Yorkshire and Tyne Tees Television, and aired in 1976 on Nine Network in Australia and ITV in the United Kingdom. His father and brother appear totally spineless, although the line adopted for the series is that they are fish out of water and good Christians.
