About this deal

DPReview readers have spoken: after two rounds of voting, it's time to announce the winner of our 2023 Reader's Choice Product of the Year award, along with a couple of honorable mentions. All things considered, the Nikon D7500 offers some excellent features in a surprisingly compact and affordable form. On the outside, the D7500 sports a carbon-fibre body rather than metal alloy, though it feels plenty sturdy enough nonetheless and it is weather-sealed.

Looks as thou this sensor/processor combination on the D7500 is showing superior test results to the D500/D7200/D5500.In some ways is its, especially raw image quality where the D7200's Toshiba sensor exhibits horrible fixed pattern banding in pushed raw files, whereas the D7500 does not.

That might have been an acceptable trade off 2-3 years back with the D7200 and D750 in exchange for good OVF subject tracking. The D500 is nice, but not a viable option for most, either due to cost or lack of consumer options like a flash. Also, a video-optimized Flat Picture Control mode can be used during recording to flatten the overall contrast curve for more control during post-production and color grading.

You cannot seperate the score given to video or stills and remove it from the overall score when comparing say a Sony to a Nikon, one person may want very good video in his body, another may be ok with just having video as long as the stills side is very good. If you want a compact camera that produces great quality photos without the hassle of changing lenses, there are plenty of choices available for every budget. This does have a slight impact on the D7500’s outright resolution, though its speed, low-light performance and overall image quality are first rate. And the in-camera Picture Control system makes it easy to apply your own creative style whether you’re shooting stills or video.

If you use a camera for time lapse often, you tend to change between R+F and a smaller size regularly.

If you’re not used to Nikon DSLRs, it might seem as if there’s no particular logic to the button placements, so it could be a while before you can change settings fluently and instinctively.
