About this deal

With each studio album they recorded, the Beatles sought out new ways to express themselves and push their music forward. I know that QRP has their hands full, but surely someone with a better reputation could have been tapped. After creating several remarkable remixes of later period Beatles albums, in 2022 Giles Martin and his trusty compadre Sam Okell have finally turned their attention to Revolver. But when you start listening to the early versions of these songs in their embryonic states — via the two full LPs of outtakes dubbed Sessions — you hear the evolution of the rhythms and beats he brought to the table. Yet the main attraction of the outtakes is what happens outside of the music: the snatches of conversation, laughter and friendly disagreement that place the listener in the room with four young men who feel as if there is nothing they cannot do.

In the original stereo mix, the quartet was locked in the middle with vocals on either channel, so it’s just wonderful hearing this spread out more naturally. My "Let It Be" box has horrendous sibilance and IGD, across the entire set, and I went through 3 of And Your Bird Can Sing may just be one of the Beatles most underrated songs in their entire catalog, and while Dr. I expect they’ll release all the Beatles’ early albums in remixed stereo now, like you, I can’t wait for “Rubber Soul” remixed.Curiously, the two Sessions discs had none of that dust, which leads me to think they may have been made by different team in the production chain. And the album’s mood never stays in one place for long; the mortality permeating the emotionally sophisticated Eleanor Rigby contrasts nicely with the innocence of Good Day Sunshine.

If you don’t have a copy of Revolver in mono, this version will certainly be useful, but it doesn’t quite have the warmth of the all-analog-mastered version included in September 2009’s The Beatles In Mono vinyl box set. Across all the configurations, Revolver's Special Edition showcases the Grammy-winning original album artwork created by The Beatles' longtime friend, German bassist and artist Klaus Voormann. Some 57 years later it is still a remarkable album in terms of songcraft, but those of us who weren’t around at the time probably can’t fully appreciate how paradigm-bending and genre-warping it was when first released.I haven’t listened closely in the context of these new mixes but I’m sure it’s at least somewhat audible. On the down side, I’d never before realized how out of tune the backing vocals on “I Want to Tell You” were – the boys probably should have honed those a little better before committing them to tape. Being an Elvis fan as well, I have been listening to the special series on Sirius XM where they take you through each of Presley’s recording sessions.

Many times, that lost sonic data (if you will) was crucial to delivering a sense of realism — and that sense of place in so far as studio ambiance is concerned.

On "Taxman"] I can take off the guitar, I can take off the bass, and then I can even separate the snare drum and kick drum as well. Many fans consider this album to be a better and more important release than their generally acknowledged masterpiece, June 1967’s Sgt.
