About this deal

I listened to this on audio book, so that may have made a difference as to why I didn't connect that well to it. Daisy has also appeared on a number of TV and radio shows including Woman’s Hour, The Today Programme, Soul Music, A Good Read, This Morning and Good Morning Britain. This is a fabulous and fierce take on womanhood in the workplace and the toxic relationship we can have with our vocation. During my time at uni, instead of going to lectures which could have actually enriched my mind, I spent many solitary weeks untangling necklaces inside dingy fashion cupboards and feeling sick at the thought of asking editors what they needed me to do next.

As someone far removed from corporate life in London I didn’t necessarily think I’d relate to this book. I just read an article in one of the Sunday supplements about these elevens, the pair of short, vertical frown lines that form in the gap between our eyebrows, which apparently must be Botoxed into oblivion before they start to multiply into other numbers. So perceptive and wise about the media, privilege, the differing but equally troubling pressures that women of all ages face, while still being moving, laugh out loud funny, and inspiring. As she did with sex in her first novel, Insatiable, now Daisy Buchanan holds up a mirror to the changing way we work in the raw and relatable Careering . Some of the data that are collected include the number of visitors, their source, and the pages they visit anonymously. It is accepted by you that Daunt Books has no control over additional charges in relation to customs clearance. Much thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review!

One of the most poignant threads throughout the novel is this idea of ‘The Girl’ as someone who’s wearing designer clothes and getting regular beauty treatments, when the reality for many 18-35 year old women trying to make it in London is living in a mouldy bedsit eating beans on toast! Careering centres itself around the pressures women face in the workplace and in the case of this novel within the media industry, where we face criticism and nuclear burnout to become the idealised ‘successful career woman’ with it all. She's safe there, it keeps her busy at all waking hours and leaves her little time to think of much else. After reading and completely adoring Insatiable I knew that I had to read Careering as soon as I could get my hands on it.

For me, one of the best elements of the book is portraying plural women with diverse dreams, experiences, and characteristics, showing how the corporate world can affect us at any given moment of our journey. As Imogen is a sex blogger, I think the book is trying to send some sort of message about the modern woman feeling empowered and yet shamed for it? Instead she’s tasked with creating an online magazine aimed at young women - or ‘The Girl’ as Harri likes think of her. However, somewhere along the way, the story lost its original momentum and that is where I also lost my enthusiasm.A love story about work, self-worth and modern womanhood, Careering is, quite simply, the funniest novel I've read all year. moving in a way that feels out of control*There's a fine line between on the right track and coming off the rails.
