Influenced by silent film sizes such as Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, he created a unique art form from it after the war that his heritages continue to this day. The art of silence speaks to the soul, like music, making comedy, tragedy, and romance, involving you and your life. His last film appearances included small roles in Klaus Kinski's Paganini (1989) and Joseph's Gift (1998).

The film features interviews with Marcel’s surviving family members, which includes his teenage grandson Louis Chevalier, who is trained as a dancer. In 1947 Marceau created Bip the Clown, whom he first played at the Théâtre de Poche (Pocket Theatre) in Paris. In 1944 Marcel's father was captured by the Gestapo and deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp, where he was killed.His silent mimed exercises, which included The Cage, Walking Against the Wind, The Mask Maker, and In The Park, all became classic displays. In 1949, following his receipt of the Deburau Prize (established as a memorial to the 19th-century mime master Jean-Gaspard Deburau) for his second mimodrama, Death before Dawn, Marceau founded Compagnie de Mime Marcel Marceau, the only company of pantomime in the world at the time. The Art of Silence is a documentary directed by Maurizius Staerkle-Drux, whose deaf father Christoph Staerkle is himself a mime influenced by Marcel Marceau. He inspired several generations of artists, including his grandson and his family, who shed new light on his life’s work.
