About this deal

The improved greyscale can make your arty prints look professional, especially when blown up onto A3 paper. It has a flatbed scanner that supports up to legal-size paper but lacks an automatic document feeder to process long, multi-page documents.

With full Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, and Ethernet connectivity, integrating this printer with your existing home set-up will be a breeze! And the Micro Piezo printhead technology will deliver the same great quality that Epson is renowned for across all three functions; printing, scanning and copying. We found that while printing single-sided pages of black and white text was fast, printing on both sides of the page slowed things right down. The bottles and tanks are designed for ease of use, meaning no hassle or mess when it's time to refill. You must instead tap a button on the touchscreen, and the printer will retract the tray, allowing you to close the front of the printer.

As for the setup process, the hardest part was finding and removing all the tape and bits of packing materials. Epson has greatly improved their ink dispersion technology, replacing the light cyan and light magenta colours with pigment black and photo grey for a higher level of print accuracy. It's about average in size and weight for a professional-grade wide-format photo printer, but it’s considerably heavier and somewhat bigger than most consumer-grade machines. You can either follow the step-by-step onscreen prompts, or follow the QR code displayed on screen that takes you to a downloadable Android/iOS app. I love being able to have one tray with 5×7 semigloss paper while loading the main tray with plain paper, and the top rear-feed slot works very well for printing on beefier papers.

My primary focus will be features and performance relative to amateur photographers who want to print their photos at home without breaking the bank or sacrificing overall print quality. On the other hand, 4x6 prints are a bit less demanding, and the ET-8550 can print a low-quality 4x6 on glossy paper in well under 30 seconds.

On our mono text test, printed at standard settings, text characters looked a bit rough around the edges, which you can see even without getting the magnifying glass out.It uses an innovative 6-colour ink system (including individual photo black and grey inks) for high quality, low-cost printing, with easy refilling. When comparing ET-8500 black-and-white prints with those from Canon’s Pro-200, some reviewers felt that there were some images where Canon produced a more truly neutral print, noting that the ET-8500’s print had a very slight cool tint to it, but it depended upon the photo, the lighting, and the media used 7 In general, when producing black-and-white prints, dye inks tend to display much more variability under different lighting conditions than pigments. It’s more competitive at a smaller scale, though, with six 6x4in photos printing in 8mins 47secs, only two seconds behind the Pixma PRO-200. If you've printed photos at home, you've likely dealt with frustrations getting prints to match what you see on the screen, but the ET-8550 did well without any adjustments.

The ET-8550 produces significantly higher-quality documents and photos, and it prints a little faster overall. The Sony a9 III is the world's first full-frame mirrorless camera to feature a global electronic shutter with simultaneous readout. Normal is quite speedy, and the text and graphics are smoother, and with finer detail than Economy; for most of the time, this setting provides the best balance of quality and speed.

Epson advertises that it can print a 4" x 6" photo (Draft Quality on glossy paper) in 15 seconds; however, it's closer to 36 seconds from the moment you initiate the print job.
