The app plants a virtual seed and grows a tree during the time you specify, and if you pick up your phone/open other apps, it kills the tree - I know it's not real, but even that little bit of tangibility is enough to motivate me to leave my phone alone! If you want to get the most of out of your employees, don’t measure face time, measure their output. If I’m dating a girl and she insists that we talk on the phone daily, I know that it’s a recipe for disaster. Everything I’ve achieved so far in life has been through my own effort but ONLY with support along the way. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you don’t see the level of performance you’re expecting, right out of the gate.

Apparently it distracts the part of our brain that is most likely to wander, so we can really focus and get what we need to done. That just leaves the potential roadblocks of ‘how to do it’, or ‘what to do next’, or ‘is this the right way to do it?I manage this blog, a newsletter, and I’m also working on an upcoming podcast, all while working full-time as an engineer. I tend to do this in two hour slots; we check in with each other and set a goal at the beginning of our session, then turn off all notifications and really focus for a couple of hours, then check in to see how we did after. I genuinely feel as though this is a major turning point, and now I just need to quit nicotine and other drugs. This isn’t really an issue of attention span as much as it is an issue of a poorly designed environment that’s not conducive to creativity, productivity or focus. In fact I started planning for Last week and the things I’ve got lined up beyond now way back in October.
